Shirley Mae Williams, age 90, passed away on January 21, 2020. She was born on August 4, 1929 in San Francisco, California to Glenn Elbert and Mary Violet Smith. She attended school and graduated in Oakland, California.
During World War II, while still living in California, she met a young sailor from Wyoming. After returning home, he sent her an engagement ring in the mail. Shirley married Spencer Blaine Williams in the Logan LDS temple on July 29, 1947. During their marriage, Shirley and Blaine lived in Wyoming, Idaho and Utah. They were married for 68 years until Blaine’s death in 2016.
She had eight children; Loretta Joy (Vern), Spencer Vaughn (deceased), Mary Kathleen (Gary), Raymond Grant (Susie), Bruce Dale (Jamie), Keith Allan (deceased), Kurtis Gayle (Nicole), Kenton Glenn (Amy).
Shirley was always involved and busy with her children, grandchildren and other pursuits in her life. She taught piano during her entire adult life where she assisted many students to learn to play. Playing the piano and organ was a significant part of her life. She served as Ward Organist several times and played in the Ogden Temple. She loved to sew, and was an amazing seamstress. She made many of her own clothes and provided clothing alterations for others. She was an avid reader and loved books.
Shirley was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in many callings. She loved to serve others and was loved by many.
She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.
With her husband Blaine Williams, she co-owned The Squire men’s clothing store in Layton Utah for over 20 years. She also sold jewelry at the ZCMI store in Layton.
Recently, she was described by her children and grandchildren as a powerhouse, a spitfire, and an example of feminine intelligence. Others expressed that she is watching over us from the other side of the veil. Her son Kent described many of our feelings well when he wrote, “It is hard to say goodbye, but Mom’s back together with Dad. She will be missed by very many people who loved her.”
Shirley was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was very involved in her grandchildren’s lives and attended their activities as often as she could.
