Shirley Marie Hyde Mortensen
3/26/1929 ~ 9/24/2012
LAYTON, UT a" Shirley Marie Hyde Mortensen, 83, passed away Monday, September 24, 2012 from complications due to a stroke in Ogden, UT. Her parents were William Thomas Hyde III and Jessie Hunter. She was born on March 26, 1929 in Ogden, UT. She married Burton P. Mortensen on November 21, 1952 in the Salt Lake Temple. He died in March of 2003. Shirley attended schools in American Fork, UT, and at Utah State University in Logan, UT. She served a mission to the Northern States, and also served with her sweetheart in the Family History Mission in NYC. She and Burt loved being Ogden Temple workers. She held many other church callings serving faithfully in each. Her community activities included serving as an election judge, and working as a reading tutor for local elementary schools. She was an exemplary volunteer with the Auxiliary at Davis Hospital and Medical Center in Layton, UT, since opening in 1976. The Utah Commission of Volunteers named her their 2011 Silver Bowl recipient of Davis County, for over 50,000 hours of volunteer service. She loved working in the gift shop, making many cherished friendships there.
She is survived by children: Holly Wilson (James), Gail Johnson (Ralph), Scott, Lane (Alese), Diane Baker (Ren), and Jared; 20 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ronald Hyde (Sue) and Reed Hyde (Lorna Jean).
She was a gifted crochet artisan and loved to do fine handwork items. Many Davis Hospital babies, friends and family members enjoy the beautiful blessing dresses and booties she made. She loved her family, the scriptures, and all those who touched her life. She truly believed she had the "errand of angels, to do whatsoever is gentle and human, to cheer and to bless in humanity''s name." Her whole life was the epitome of serving others, a fine example for us. We were blessed by having this Christ like woman in our lives.
Thanks for the loving care, comfort and prayers given to Shirley and her family. She would want us to be kind, serve others and do what is right, so pass it on.
