Shirley Ann Parkinson

WASHINGTON TERRACE a€" Shirley Ann Parkinson, 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 3, 2010 at her daughter''s home in Washington Terrace. She faced her death the same way she lived her life, with dignity and grace.

Shirley was born in Rexburg, Idaho, to Ola Delbert and Rosa Widdison Rowe on February 26, 1920. When she was two years old, she lost her mother in a horse and wagon accident. Her father, who was lame from a broken hip, had to put the children up for adoption. Shirley was adopted by James and Rose Laird Winmill of Rexburg. She attended Adams Elementary, Washington Jr. High and Madison High School. She was the last surviving sibling of her six brothers and sisters.

Shirley was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Washington Terrace 12th Ward.

Shirley met her future husband, L. Merrill Parkinson, at a St. Patrick''s Day Dance in Rexburg. They were married August 30, 1937 in Dillon, Montana. As their family grew, they lived in Rexburg, Idaho; Scott City, Kansas; and Washington Terrace. They had three daughters, Evelyn Fullmer Lane, Elaine (DeVon) Coles, and Marilyn Mitchell.

After Merrill retired from Hill Air Force Base, they bought a motor home and began traveling. They traveled everywhere from Alaska to Panama and points east. They also owned a boat and would entertain family and friends at Pine View. They loved to "camp" and fish at Flaming Gorge.

The family would like to thank Paige, Jody and Marge of Legacy Hospice for their kindness and helpfulness to Shirley and the family.

Surviving are two daughters, Elaine and Marilyn, six grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Merrill, her eldest daughter, Evelyn, both her adoptive and birth parents, one adoptive sister, and six brothers and sisters.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, January 9th at 2 p.m. at the Sugar City, Idaho Cemetery.
