Shirley Elizabeth (Chilton) Potchernick, 89, of Clearfield passed away, surrounded by family and friends, on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at The Abbington in Layton.
Shirley was born June 28, 1935 in Arnold, Nottinghamshire, England to Leslie Chilton and Evelyn Storr Chilton. After growing up in England and living in the Channel Islands in her late teens, Shirley and several friends embarked across Europe on their way to Australia for college. It was while in Pakistan that she met and dated her husband Stanley Rosen Potchernick, Jr. while he was serving in the USAF. They were married on September 7, 1963, in Houston, Texas. Their union was later solemnized in the Logan Temple in Utah. During their 47 year marriage they were fortunate enough to live and travel throughout the world.
Shirley was a longtime active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many callings throughout the years in Primary, Young Women’s, Relief Society and as an early morning seminary teacher in both Saudi Arabia and Arkansas. She and her husband were called as senior missionaries to a mission in the black townships of Johannesburg, South Africa, from 2003 to 2005.
Shirley is survived by her daughters, Mollie Elisabet Kuykendall (Kevin) and Jill-Emma Smith (Russell), two brothers, David Chilton and Kenneth Chilton, five grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley, her parents, Leslie and Evelyn, her siblings, Alwin Chilton, Bill Chilton, Jeff Chilton, Harry Chilton, Brian Chilton, Lillian Ruscoe, June Chilton, Mollie Perrett and Maureen Chilton.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to all who befriended her and cared for her at The Abbington and with Inspiration Hospice in Layton, Utah.
A Graveside service will be held Thursday august 29, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. at the Utah Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Camp Williams, 17111 South Camp Williams Road, Bluffdale, Utah. Thursday, August 29, 2024 at 1:30pm.
