Shirley Ann Stewart

Shirley C. Stewart, age 86, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at her home surrounded by loving family and friends. She was born January 7, 1929, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Ray and Ethel Cottrell. Shirley graduated from Granite High School where she served as a class officer and pianist for many of the school plays. She later attended Brigham Young University where she pursued her dream of earning a degree in music. She also attended the McCune School of Music in Salt Lake City as well as received training on the organ by Alexander Schreiner at the Salt Lake Tabernacle.

Shirley married John D. Stewart in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on March 20, 1950, and together they shared a wonderful and loving marriage for over 56 years. Shirley remained a lifelong resident of Kaysville and later Fruit Heights.

Shirley was a faithful and devoted member of the LDS Church throughout her life and loved to serve the church through her music. She served as ward organist for over 50 years as well as a Bountiful Temple organist for 16 years. Earlier in her life she was proud to have earned her Golden Gleaner Award.

Along with her husband, Shirley operated her beloved Stewart’s Gift Shop in Kaysville for 40 years. She regularly donated clothing and other items to support organizations in the community as well as individuals and families in need. She was active in community and civic affairs and served as the Davis County Secretary and later State Vice Chairwoman of the Republican Party. She worked several years for the Union Pacific Railroad from which she retired in 1994.

Shirley greatly loved family and devoted many years caring for both her parents and her husband’s parents, LeConte and Zipporah Stewart, until their passing. She loved her children and grandchildren and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and daughter throughout her life. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and family. We shall miss your beautiful smile, laugh and hugs, Mom, and look forward to being with you again.

Shirley is survived by her four children: Anne, Lance, Jarolen and Amber, 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at the South Mountain Road LDS Chapel, 901 S. Mountain Road, Fruit Heights, UT. Friends may visit with family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Kaysville Mortuary 400 S. Main and at the church Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Interment, Kaysville City Cemetery.

The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Drs. Bruce Burtenshaw, Eric Anding, Mano Swartz, and Gary Green for the many years of care and support along with the staff at Layton Tanner clinic. In addition, the family would also like to thank Hearts for Hospice for their help and support.
