Shizu Nakano Miya SYRACUSE – Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, Shizu Nakano Miya, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 23, 2007 with her family by her side. She was born September 25, 1914 in Montrose, Colorado, to Sanichi Nakano and Shinayo Ikehara Nakano. She was the third child of nine sons and two daughters. She received her education in Syracuse School and graduated from Davis High School in 1934. She married Manji Miya on January 29, 1935 in Syracuse, Utah. After their marriage they lived in Clearfield, Utah. In 1947 they moved to Syracuse where they farmed and raised their five children. In addition to running the farm, she helped her brother-in-law operate the Miya Tofu Company until she retired. Shizu was a member of the Buddhist Church of Ogden, and a longtime member of the Buddhist Women’s Association. She was very talented in arts and crafts and she made many gifts to give to her loved ones. Surviving are her children, Kiyoko Okawa, Orangeville, CA; Robert Hirochika Miya, Virginia Beach, VA; Marie Toshiko Hirabayashi, Syracuse, UT; Beth Sachiko (Terry) Kuroiwa, Sugar Land, TX; Gary Shoji (Diane) Miya, Plano, TX; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Rokuro (Miyuki) Nakano, Bountiful, UT; Russell Kazuo (Betty) Nakano, Montana; sisters-in-law, Lily Nakano, Hermiston, OR; Fumi Nakano, Corona Del Mar, CA; Aileen Nakano, Ogden, UT. She was preceded in death by her husband, two grandsons, Todd Kuroiwa, Rodney Kuroiwa, seven brothers, Takeo, Joe, Kenzo, Shiro, John, Jim, and Frank, and one sister, Fusako Kakuda. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 29, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the Buddhist Temple of Ogden, 155 North Street, Ogden, UT. Friends and family may call at the Buddhist Temple on Friday, December 28, 2007 from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.
