Shizue Tozawa Marumoto
1933 ~ 2021
Shizue Tozawa Marumoto, age 87, passed away peacefully February 6, 2021. She was born March 12, 1933 in Etajima, Japan to Yoshimatsu and Takiyo Tozawa. She married Hiroki Marumoto in Japan on December 6, 1971 who preceded her in death in 2016.
Shizue, or “Suzie” to her many American friends, was a giving, generous soul. Happy to receive all into her home, very few were able to get away without a plate of food or produce from her renowned and vast garden. A talented seamstress and master tailor, she enjoyed crafting and altering fashion from everyone from her own children to wedding dresses and even the gown of Miss Utah.
Shizue worked at ZCMI before being persuaded to work for Nordstrom. She also worked with her good friend Emi at a small alterations shop, and on her own from her home. No matter where she chose to pursue her trade, she always made friends and impressed with her skill and warm personality.
She loved her garden and it showed in the huge area she dedicated in her yard to fruits, flowers and vegetables. Every year she planted far more than her own family could eat and relished giving away the bounty of her labors to friends and neighbors.
Shizue was also a talented player of the Koto, the Japanese thirteen-stringed harp. A demanding art which she was able to put on display during the Utah Olympics of 2002 as part of their “Cultural Olympiad.”
For all her talents and hobbies, she was a dedicated mother and wife first and foremost. She treasured her family and embraced every moment with them. Later, she opened that love as “Bachan” to her six grandchildren. Sometimes stern, but always loving, she always served as the spiritual and emotional center to her family.
She was also a dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and exemplified the best of that faith with joy and humility.
Shizue is survived by her son Sheldon and his wife Katherine, their three children Matthew, Jonathan and Kaitlyn, and by her son Michael and his wife Kim, with their three children William, Greyson and Kai as well as her honorary son Tony Potter. She is also survived by her elder sister, Yasue Kido, and her younger sisters Mitsue, Tamae and Tomoe.
