Sidney Rookhuyzen
ROY - Sidney Chandler Rookhuyzen, 94, passed away on Monday, Oct. 28, 2019 in Bountiful, Utah, in the company of his loved ones. He died of natural causes.
Sid was born on Oct. 17, 1925 in Ogden, Utah, to Joseph and Emily Rookhuyzen.
He served his country during World War II, dropping out of school at the age of 17 and enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the Pacific Theater and would be stationed in Japan at the end of the war. At the age of 90 he was presented with an honorary diploma from Ogden High School.
Sid married Elva Irene Ferguson on March 17, 1943 in Ogden, UT. Their marriage was solemnized in the Los Angeles LDS Temple on May 25, 1968.
The family moved to Long Beach, CA, then to Lakewood and later to Lompoc, CA where they lived for 30 years. During their time in Lompoc he owned and operated his own dry cleaning business, Alamo Cleaners, which would expand to three locations. In their twilight years, Sid and Elva returned to Ogden after a short stay in Las Vegas.
Sid was the father of eight children, with 42 grandchildren and 82 great-grandchildren.
He was an avid traveler and loved to drive. He was also a lifelong fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served as a Sunday School president, ward employment specialist and a faithful home teacher.
He is survived by his eight children, Eileen (Jeff) Rose, Cypress, CA; Lawrence (Kay) Rookhuyzen, Corona, CA; Marilyn (David) Prina, Provo, UT; Mark (Shawn) Rookhuyzen, Las Vegas, NV; Paul (Karen) Rookhuyzen, Mesa, AZ; Nancy (Michael) Freitag, Las Vegas, NV; David (Amy) Rookhuyzen, Lompoc, CA; Karen (Alberto) Duenas, Bountiful, UT.
Sid was preceded in death by his beloved Elva in 2010, his parents and brothers and sisters, except his sister, Colleen, and brother, Chuck.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019 at 11 a.m., at the Val Verde Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3317 South 800 West Bountiful, UT, 84010. A viewing will be held at the same building starting at 10 a.m.
A viewing will also take place Friday, Nov. 8th from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary at 727 N 400 E Bountiful, UT.
Interment will be at Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
