Sigurd Gjermund Nilsen
LAYTON, UTAH a" On September 22, 2011 our beloved husband, father, grandfather, son and friend, Sigurd Gjermund Nilsen, age 79, decided to see what was on the other side of the mountain. We hope the grass is greener. Sigurd was born September 8, 1932 to loving parents, Sigurd Hagbart and Ragnar Hilldeborg (Bergstedt) Nilsen in Salt Lake City. Growing up in SLC and Layton during the depression years he learned the value of hard work, from gardening at Pearl Nalder''s home, to later working construction for his cousins Finn and Abel Paulsen. Dad served in the US Army and on a mission to Norway. Dad graduated from "dear old" Davis High in 1951 and attended college at the University of Utah and Utah State University, graduating as an engineer from USU in 1965.
During his junior year at Davis, Margaret Nalder asked Dad to the girl''s choice dance. They dated for 7 years and were married in the Salt Lake Temple October 18, 1956. Through thick and thin, good times and bad, for richer or poorer, Mom and Dad saw it all during their 55 years together. They are the parents of six children, Bart (Elaine), Todd (Karen), Charlotte (Daren), Berny, Kristoffer (Tina) and Joseph (Kendra); and 16 grandchildren, Lauren, Hannah, Thomas, Emma, Jared, Erika, Wyatt, Sarah, Nathan, Logan, Karson, Taylian, Braiden, Bailee, Berklee, and Byron. Special thanks to Berny''s good friend, Shiloh Manning, FNP.
After retiring in 1997 from civil service, Dad and Mom enjoyed more time together, helped all of their children immensely, traveled to warm and cold places (thanks in part to Mom''s brother, Berny and his wife Ila). Dad and Berny farmed part of the Byron Nalder homestead for 42 years. Dad left third crop hay to bale and haul.
Dad is survived by Mom (the "woman of his dreams"), his children and grandchildren, his sister Karen (John, deceased) Larson, and brothersa"in-law, Bruce (Jeannie), Leland (Dee), Ned (Rebecca, deceased), and Berny (Ila, deceased) Nalder. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Tudi (and her husband Kaare Kloogh), and Annette (and her husband Jack Meacham), and his brothers-in-law William, Lewis and Roger (and his wife Francis) Nalder.
Dad was every bit a Norwegian and loved his cousins and heritage. While enjoying living his own way and quietly serving many, he especially looked forward to camping trips to Marsh Lake, the annual end of summer trip to the Baugh Motel in Logan, Utah and Christmas Eve. He was a high priest in the Layton East, Falcon Ridge Ward and the very best home builder/tinkerer, occasional welder, repairman, mechanic, shopper, meanderer and just good company to his family and friends. We were truly blessed by God for his companionship.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist''s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
