Soteria Bolos

OGDEN- "Yiayia" Soteria Bolos died peacefully in her home at the age of 104 on Friday, October 19, 2012, surrounded by her family. She was born in Nestani, Greece on February 10, 1908. She immigrated to the United States on August 23, 1954 with her two youngest children, Toula and Paraskevas, to join her husband, Konstantinos, who had left Greece three years prior with their two older children, Andreas and Lambros. A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Soteria witnessed and survived the Great Depression and two world wars before leaving all she had ever known to come to the United States. As newcomers to America, Soteria and her husband embraced optimism in their posterity's benefit from their determination and sacrifice. She worked tirelessly to educate and create a better life for her children, never wavering in the belief that her efforts would bring her children security and opportunity. In her later years, she enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers, and fashioning many quilts for her children and grandchildren. Soteria was a devout member of the Greek Orthodox Church her entire life, and a pillar of her home parish in Ogden. Among her many contributions, she could be seen diligently working at the annual Greek Food Festival every year. She was also a lifelong member of the Philoptochos Society (the Church's philanthropic organization), and involved herself in every aspect of parish life as long as she was able. She was loved by the entire community, who considered her as "Yiayia." She is survived by her children Andreas (Nickie), Lambros (Angeliki), Toula (Athanasios, deceased), and Paraskevas (Peggy), 12 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband on October 31, 1993. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 23 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 674 42nd Street in Ogden. Family will meet with friends on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Trisagion service at 7:00 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., Rev. Mario Giannopoulos officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church of Ogden, Utah.
