Spencer Kent Speirs
7/14/1983 ~ 2/24/2014
Spencer Kent Speirs passed away at home on Monday, February 24, 2014 surrounded by loved ones. Spencer was born July 14, 1983 to Kent and Charlotte Speirs in Fort Worth, Texas. He was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis at 4 months and had his first craniofacial surgery at 12 months. Spencer was 3 years old when tumors caused the removal of his left eye. He learned at a young age to put others at ease by explaining to everyone who asked, "Don't worry honey...it's just my broken eye."
Spencer became an outgoing soul that never met a stranger. He was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor and the ability to quote dialogue from movies verbatim. He loved to sing and performed in many choirs throughout his life. Spencer was a die-hard Texas Rangers fan and attended games throughout his childhood and youth with his Grandpa Charles. He graduated from LD Bell High School in 2002 and went on a Spanish Speaking Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chicago, Illinois from 2003-2005. After his mission, Spencer attended BYU- Idaho where he received a bachelor's degree in business. He moved to Utah to serve clients for Fidelity Investments and met the love of his life Corinne Butler at church. She was teaching a young single adult Sunday School Class and he decided to ask the teacher out on a date. Ever the lover of cars, their 2nd date was at an auto show. They found a car with the air-conditioning running and sat in it for an hour getting to know each other better! They were married on June 21, 2008 in the Provo LDS Temple, and welcomed their first little girl into the world in Sept. 2009. Two years later another daughter was born to them.
At the beginning of 2013, Spencer and Corinne felt impressed to move their family to Texas. He transferred to Fidelity's Westlake office in May and not long after, he began experiencing tingling in his hands and feet. By the beginning of July he learned there was an inoperable mass in his brain stem caused by NF. He became paralyzed from the neck down and spent two months in ICU receiving radiation therapy and chemo. When treatment proved unsuccessful, Spencer returned home to be with his family, his greatest desire was to live to see his son born in February. A very proud father witnessed the birth via face time on February 3rd.
Spencer faced every challenge in his life with good humor, eternal optimism and a strong and abiding faith in God's plan of salvation.
He is survived by his wife Corinne Butler Speirs; Children, Lydia (4), Ellie (2), and Wyatt (3weeks); Parents, Kent and Charlotte Speirs and siblings Seth and Hannah Speirs.
