Stana Louise Cowley Wood
1936 - 2021
Stana Louise Cowley Wood passed away on 5 March 2021, surrounded by loved ones in her cozy little home. The greeting card industry might never recover. While the Heavens are happy to have one of their angels return, we are left to mourn the passing of a kind and loving soul, who was an unceasing source of joy, comfort, and love for so many. Indeed, the world is just a little grayer now that Stana has gone home.
Stana was born on Valentine ’s Day, which seemed fitting for someone destined to bring so much love into the world. Stana grew up in Layton, Utah, where her family owned the local Kowley Drug Store. Stana described her childhood as a wonderful adventure and enjoyed her time with her older brothers Mark and Jerry, who she “idolized” and they in turn treated her as one of the boys. Stana was raised by loving parents, Stanford and LaRee Cowley. When Stana’s parents purchased a cattle ranch in Wyoming, she quickly adapted to the “cowboy lifestyle” and spent countless summers riding horses and enjoying nature. Stana loved to ski, and could be found zipping down the slopes well into her senior years. Growing up in a family of accomplished athletes, Stana was an avid sports enthusiast, and loved watching the BYU games with her family close by. After attending BYU, and embarking on many wonderful adventures, Stana married Donald Wood, and raised her family, first in California, and then Utah, where she spent the last 48 years living at her home in Farmington. Over the years in Utah, she made lifelong friends through her work at the Tanner Clinic, Hill Air Force Base, and Farmington and Hillfield Elementary schools. Stana’s generosity knew no bounds. Anyone who has ever received a greeting card, text message, or hand written note from Stana, can attest to her loving kindness. Her traditional sign-off of “Sunshine and Rainbows,” “Life is Delicious,” or “I love you more than tongue can tell,” followed by an assortment of Emojis, always left you with a smile. She enjoyed playing with her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren and laughing with family and friends. We will miss her accepting nature, unconditional love, and contagious smile. She loved with no boundaries and was a friend to everyone she met. Even as she entered her 80’s, saddled with a debilitating lung disease, she was still riding rollercoasters, going to rodeos, cheering for her BYU Cougars, and serving others. She lived life to the absolute fullest. As a result, a common expression among her acquaintances was, “When I grow up, I want to be just like Stana!”
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was central in her life. Over the years she served faithfully in many capacities in her ward and her stake. Stana was genuinely committed to living a Christ like life, devoted to loving and caring for everyone. Her life’s mission statement was “I choose to look for the right in any given situation and become a beacon of love and joy.”
The light of her life was her family. She was preceded in death by her brothers Mark and Jerry, and three lovely grandchildren. She is survived by her loving husband Donald of 56 years, and her children, Jodie (Kevin) Banks, Tami (Mike) Perucca, Amy (Paige) Sorensen, and Jon (Nicole) Wood, her 19 grandchildren, and her 22 great-grandchildren.
Stana said it best in her own parting words - “So you see, I’m most sincere when I say that you are my family. You’ve taught me, humbled me, laughed with me, but best of all, you’ve accepted me with all my “glitches.” So in leaving, in a sense, I’m cutting loose my safety net and am embarking into unchartered waters. A word of caution, when you accept me, you are stuck with me for life. I do love you….Indeed it’s been a slice of heaven.”
Mom, our hearts ache knowing you are no longer here, but we take comfort knowing you will always be just a prayer away.
We would like to thank Dr. Badke, Stana’s pulmonary doctor, and the “angels” at Suncrest Hospice team, who over the last 10 months provided Stana with an improved quality of life and a “daily slice of heaven.” She loved each of you as a treasured friend. We’d like to especially thank Marisa Smeding, Stana’s nurse, who was her loyal advocate from the very beginning, and a pillar of strength to her last breath.
