Stanley "Skipper" Eric Carlsen

Stanley Eric “Skipper” Carlsen NORTH OGDEN - Stanley Eric “Skipper” Carlsen of North Ogden passed away at age 79 on Tuesday, May 15, 2012. He was born in Ogden on October 29, 1932 to Alexander and Lily Carlsen, and was the younger brother of Alexander “Swede” Carlsen Jr., and Carl Evan “Dick” Carlsen (both deceased.) He was a 1951 graduate of Weber High School, after which he studied Manufacturing Engineering. Stan always worked hard. As a young man, he worked in his dad’s blacksmith shop and at Farrer’s A&W Root Beer Stand in Riverdale. Stan served in the Utah National Guard for 9 years where he was an artillery fire direction specialist and became a Staff Sergeant. He also served in the Ogden City Police Reserve. He worked at Marquardt, Hill AFB, Hercules, McGee & Hogan, and Chain Pump before becoming a Tool Design and Manufacturing Engineer at Thiokol where he worked on projects such as the space shuttle solid rocket boosters for 19 years until his retirement in 1992. In 1975 he married Isolde Dittmar Collins and became a wonderful father to her youngest daughter. They had a lifetime of adventures together before he lost her to cancer in 1994. Stan later solemnized their marriage in the Ogden LDS Temple. Stan is survived by his former wife, Joyce Stockley and his children, Dean (Sheila) Carlsen, Layton; Judy (Gilmer) Carlsen-Brush, Plain City; Shari Ober, Minneapolis, MN; Gary (Lisa) Carlsen, Littleton, CO; and Jennifer (Kerry) Foote, Carlsbad, CA, as well as stepchildren David Collins and Elona Collins; 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Stan truly lived life to the fullest. He enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing, hunting, exploring old mining towns, golfing, and skiing. He liked reading and watching movies about WWII. Years were spent riding motorcycles in Canyonlands with a group of close friends who called themselves “The Wild Bunch Gang.” He also restored and collected all kinds of guns, becoming a dealer and a member of the Utah Gun Collector’s Association. Perhaps his greatest passion was restoring old Model A and Model T cars as well as classic Mustangs. He was a member of the Beehive Model A Club where he served as president. Even in his declining years and days, Stan never lost his smile or his great sense of humor which brought contentment and laughter to all who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held at the graveside Saturday, May 19 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd., South Ogden, where military honors will be accorded. Services entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary. The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff at Emeritus Estates and CNS Hospice for their love, support, and exceptional care. Donations may be made in Stan’s memory to the National Parkinson Foundation at www3.parkinson.org/goto/stan.carlsen.
