Stanley Rossen Potchernick, Jr. 1941 a" 2010
OGDEN - After a courageous battle with cancer, our humble and loving dad and grandfather passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on November 19, 2010, in Ogden, Utah.
Stan was born on March 26, 1941, in San Antonio, Texas, to Stanley Rawson Potchernick, Sr. and Julia Berndt Potchernick.
Stan was a man of immense character and integrity who had a great love for his country and what it stood for. He proved this pride and respect by serving in the Intelligence Division of the United States Air Force. After his service, Stan went on to work for IBM for 10 years in Houston, Texas, followed by The Aramco Oil Company in Saudi Arabia, from which he retired in 1987. Understanding the value of hard work, he was unable to stay retired. He then started Stan''s Floors, a wood flooring business with his father. Stan''s Floors was a business that quickly became synonymous with honest, quality craftsmanship; a true "handshake is as good as your word" business that mirrored the man that he was.
While stationed in Pakistan from 1960 to 1962, with the USAF, he met and dated his English born wife, Shirley Elizabeth Chilton Potchernick. They were married on September 7, 1963, in Houston, Texas. Their union was later solemnized in the Logan Temple in Utah. During their 47-year marriage, they were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to live and travel throughout the world.
Stan was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served faithfully in many church callings throughout his life, including a mission, with his wife as his companion, in the black townships of Johannesburg, South Africa, from 2003 to 2005. While there, he formed an employment facility for the African members of Kwa-Thema Township; teaching them basic interviewing and computer skills, and helping them to secure employment.
Stan is survived by his wife Shirley, and children; John Kirby Adams (Janet), Mollie Elisabet Kuykendall (Kevin), Jill-Emma Smith (Russell) and five grandchildren.
Stan is preceded in death by his mother and father. Survived by his sister, Evelyn Sammons.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to all who cared for him at Utah Hematology & Oncology and in the ICU at Ogden Regional Medical Center.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Clearfield 3rd Ward, 381 North Bruce Street, Clearfield, Utah.
Interment, Utah Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Camp Williams, 17111 South Camp Williams Road, Bluffdale, Utah.
