Stephen Elmer Green

January 9, 1947 — March 6, 2025

Stephen Elmer Green, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on March 6, 2025, at the age of 78, at the George Wahlen Veterans' Center in Ogden, Utah.

Born on January 9, 1947, in Ogden, Utah, Stephen was the son of Elmer Rushforth Green and Amy Green (nee Woodburn) and the oldest of four boys. He was raised in Layton, Utah, where he spent his childhood helping his family on their farm, moving cattle, and learning to ride horses almost before he could walk.

Stephen’s educational journey began at Davis High School, where he graduated in 1965, before continuing his studies at the University of Utah, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science. He devoted 20 years to the United States Army Reserves, achieving the rank of Captain. Stephen’s career spanned several roles, including his work with the VA Hospital, which took him across the country to New Mexico, West Virginia, Colorado, and Iowa. However, Utah always remained home, and he eventually settled in Syracuse, where he made lasting memories with his family.

For 14 years, Stephen was a professor of Computer Science at Weber State University, where he was known for his easygoing nature, bringing donuts to class every Friday, and being an approachable and kind instructor.

Stephen was a man of deep faith, serving many roles in his church community, including as a Stake Counselor, branch president, and as a member of the bishopric in the Syracuse Fourth Ward. He was a high priest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, always ready to serve and support those in need.

Family was the cornerstone of Steve’s life. On June 30, 1990, Steve married Leslie Kay Jenkins. Two years later, they were sealed together for time and all eternity in the Ogden Temple on April 1, 1992. For nearly 35 years, they built a beautiful family, supporting one another through life’s ups and downs, and sharing countless cherished moments over the years. Together, they had 10 children: Amy Insalaco (Mike), Anna Green, Stephanie Green, Jaimee Rapier (Paul), Catherine Green (Jon Ganahl), Benjamin Marble (Catrina), Elizabeth Green (Daniel Hurt), Matthew Marble, Jonathan Marble, and Nathan Green (Mayra Jacobo). He was also blessed with 22 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, each of whom was deeply cherished.

Stephen’s children remember him as a devoted father with a great sense of humor, always there for them, whether it was moving them, picking them up in the middle of the night, or calling every week to check in. His weekly phone calls, often filled with love and laughter, will be missed by all.

A true outdoorsman, Stephen loved fishing, music, and spending time in nature. He was an accomplished violinist and enjoyed singing in his church choir. He had a passion for cooking, especially his famous Zuppa Tuscana, and was always ready to participate in chili cook-offs. He loved food, Diet Dr. Pepper, licorice, and watching his favorite movies, including John Wayne films, Spaghetti Westerns, and WWII classics. Above all, he loved a good nap. You could often find him on a comfy couch or recliner, “resting his eyes.”

Stephen was known for his ability to tell stories, always with a kind word and a smile for everyone. He loved being “Grandpa Green” and was always ready with candy for his grandchildren. Whether through a card game, a fishing trip, or a warm meal, Stephen’s life was a testament to his kindness, humor, and boundless love for his family.

He is predeceased by his parents, Elmer and Amy Green, his brothers, Paul Green and Lawrence Green, and his daughter Jaimee Rapier. He is survived by his wife, Leslie, and their 9 children, 22 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.

Stephen’s life cannot be summed up in a few words, but his legacy of love, service, and devotion will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him. His gentle nature, work ethic, and unwavering love for his family will forever inspire all who loved him.

A celebration of Stephen’s life will be held on April 12, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist's Syracuse Mortuary. 869 South 2000 West, Syracuse. Friends may visit with family prior to service from 9:30 to 10:30 at the mortuary. Steve’s family invites all who knew him to join in honoring his memory.
