– Our beloved husband, father, friend and grandfather, Asahel Steve Cheney passed away peacefully, Friday, March 20, 2009 surrounded by his family and friends.
He was born February 14, 1937 in Brigham City, Utah to Asahel and Effie Cheney. He grew up in Farmington, Utah, where he loved to help his dad on the dairy farm. He was a self-proclaimed trouble-maker and was always looking for adventure.
He attended Davis High school and after graduation he joined the US Army.
On January 19, 1962, he married Janice Smith. They were sweethearts for 47 years and raised three children in the home he built in Syracuse. He loved his children more than anything in the world.
He owned a successful contracting business for 48 years. He was a gifted architect and general contractor. We will never forget the excellent homes, furniture, shelves and doll houses he built for us.
Steve loved spending time with his family and they cherish the times spent with him. He always had the best stories and he would captivate his audiences for hours while he told his amazing tales. His grandchildren will never forget the “falling rock” ghost that haunted Utah canyons. He had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved to hear jokes and really loved to laugh at them. We will never forget that laugh or his great smile.
He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, hunting and especially fishing. He looked forward to the summers and his annual steelhead fishing trip on the Salmon River with family and good friends. On rare occasions when Steve wasn’t outdoors, he could be found in the coffee shop with all of his “buddies”. He also enjoyed watching movies, especially Clint Eastwood films.
Steve had many people in his life who loved him dearly and will genuinely miss his gentle manner and positive attitude. The world has truly lost a great man. He is survived by his wife, Janice, son, Dale (Pam), son, Doug; daughter, Mitzi (Erin) and eight grandchildren, Leslie (Ryan) Sorenson, Meghan (Dave) Skelton, Sammie, Jackie, Kennedi, Aspen, Jaxson, Addison, one great-granddaughter, Emery Ann and his good friend of 51 years, Lamont Sei.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
We love you Gramps and we will never forget you. Make sure you catch a big fish for us. We dream of the day when we will see you again.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 25th at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South.
