Steven Wayne Miles (55), passed away peacefully, Wednesday, January 27, 2021, with his wife, Jane, and sister-in-law, Leslie, by his side. Son of Clifford Miles and Kathy Miles, he was born October 27, 1965, in Denver, Colorado. He is survived by his wife, Jane, his father and mother, his brother, David Miles (wife Kirstie, niece Emma, and nephew Ian), his sister Kim Bicket (husband Jay, niece Jennifer). He is also survived by sister-in-law, Leslie Velasco (husband David), brother-in-law, DJ, sister-in-law, Nancy, nephews Tripp Hallowell (wife Michele, great-nieces Harper and Saylor), Matt Hallowell, David Christopher Velasco (wife Mariah, great-nephew JohnPaul) and Ryan Velasco (wife Caitlin, great-nephew Bodhi).
Visionary in his art and creativity. Full of life and love and laughter. Steven filled the room wherever he went and always made people feel comfortable. He was loved. He was kind. He loved animals. He loved life and experiencing new places, new people, and new things. His life was simply a palette of colors and the world was his canvas.
A true artist and designer. Intuitive. Effortless. The creative process was his forte. He was free. This freedom was expressed through his art and the beauty he created. Never narrow in thought or speech, Steven had a gift to see the many facets of life both colorful and difficult. This was his special gift.
Proud to be a fifth generation Colorado native, Steven spent his youth in Castle Rock, Colorado, graduating from Douglas County High School where he was active in art programs, theater and concert choirs. His artwork was highly prized.
To say that Steven enjoyed life to the fullest would be an understatement. He loved his wife. He loved his brother and sister. He loved his nieces and nephews. And he especially loved his in-laws, Don and Jan.
One thing’s for sure, he loved and enjoyed spending time with Jane’s four nephews and later their wives and children - Tripp’s craziness; DC’s quick wit and banter; Ryan’s interesting ideas; and Matt’s golf game. It seems when they all got together, mayhem ensued.
Steven and his wife, Jane, hit it off right away and were married for 33 beautiful years. Jane was always his love and first concern. They moved to Hawaii the year they married. First in Honolulu and then on to Lea on the North Shore where Steven attended BYU Hawaii and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. During this time he held numerous art shows highlighting the color and beauty inspired by his Hawaii.
Steven was always doing fun, kind, loving things for Jane. He was full of surprises. 33 years of great passion, fun, and a special love that only soulmates share. They loved going to the theater, ballet, and symphony - and, of course, the movies. Steven also loved discovering new places and meeting new people. That was it. He simply loved people and could always find the best in others. He did all this together with Jane.
His dear Golden Retrievers, Addilaide and Beatrice were his children, along with Sundance. What fun they had together chasing balls or leaping into a river to scare up the ducks, or just cuddling up and taking a nap.
“Ed Earl” and “Molley” to each other, Steven loved music of all kinds, whether listening to jazz and playing it cool, or swing dancing with Jane on big-band night in Fort Collins. Often waltzing to the music of What’s Up Doc or Blue Danube, he would dance with her every night before bed.
A “foody” at heart, he took his art to the kitchen and enjoyed creating delicious meals - nothing like a good filet mignon.
While he loved laughter and adventure, just as importantly, he loved his time of quiet solitude, reflection. To delve deeply into his foundations of faith and the human condition. To dive into a completely new area of learning was quite common for him. This was his intellectual, contemplative side. A thirst for knowledge. A deep thinker. The world and life and people. He was insightful. He was empathetic. He was understanding.
Often he saw life as though through the eyes of a child with humility, meekness, and awe.
One of Steven’s great joys was to share his love of Jesus and the Gospel with the children of his faith. Ultimately, he strived to serve others, to live the gospel, to learn love and charity of our fellow man in the image of Jesus, and to give love in abundance.
He loved a beautiful sunrise. Truly loved the ocean. Early mornings full of promise and the sunset at the end of the day. The ocean gave his soul peace. Palm trees by the ocean. He just loved palm trees swaying in the breeze as he sat by the shore. This was his nirvana.
We are all grateful and better people for having known Steven. May all his sunsets dazzle and his seas be fair. Godspeed.
