Sumiko Nancy Suzuki Rose

OGDEN – Surrounded by family, mom returned home on Friday, July 11, 2014  after a long, hard-fought battle with breast cancer.

Sumi, as known by family, was born April 8, 1944 in Ogden, Utah, daughter to Yoshitaro Suzuki and Haru Sato. She was raised in Willard and later graduated from Box Elder High School in 1962.  After high school, mom attended Weber State College for two years.

On March 21, 1969, mom married her soul mate, Steve Rose, in Las Vegas, Nevada. After several moves, they finally settled in Ogden, Utah and have lived there for the past 40 years.

Mom tried her hands in many professions, ranging from hostess and waitress at the China Nite, to manager of the snack bar at the Ben Lomond Golf Course (where all the golfers fell in love with mom’s cooking). Mom also tried out her skills in the bakery world, decorating cakes at Wangsgards and then later managing the bakery and deli at Stop ‘n Shop.

While she would never admit it, mom mastered many hobbies: everything from crafting, crocheting, and cooking. Among her family and friends, mom was a master chef. “Sorry if it’s not very good”, she’d always say. We would always respond with full bellies and clean plates. Mom always put others first, especially in the kitchen where she always made sure you didn’t leave hungry. A “small” portion in mom’s world was 5 heaping scoops. Mom was a great cook, but she was an even better grandmother. Her all-time favorite hobby was spending time with her granddaughter, the love-of-her life.

Mom, you are the kindest, selfless, and most generous person we’ll ever know. You’re loved and missed more than you’ll ever know and we’re lucky to have you in our lives. Thank you for everything. Get some rest, you’ve earned it and you’ll need it. When we meet again, there will be lots of stories to tell, laughs to be had, and hugs to share.

Mom is survived by her husband, Steve; one son, Curtis, one daughter, Natalie (Tim) Martin, one granddaughter, Karlee Rose Martin, three sisters, Sachiye Frances (Chris) Matsumoto, Kikuko Dorothy (Stuart) Puls, Amy Miwako (Michael) Paris, and one sister-in-law, Phyllis Suzuki.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Kan Russell Suzuki, sisters, Hisaye Suzuki, Tsugiko Imogene Yamashita, Chiyeko Judy Ketchie, and Connie Yurika Blanch.

The family would like to thank doctors Alan Abdulla and Vincent Hansen and their staffs for their care and support.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16th at Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.  Friends may visit with family on Tuesday from 6-8 pm and on Wednesday from 9:30-10:30am at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary. 3408 Washington Blvd.
