Summer Kay Poppell Loewenstein
August 8, 1952 ~ March 21, 2017
Summer Kay Poppell Loewenstein,”Nonnie”, 64, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 after a 55 year battle with Type 1 Diabetes. She was born in Logan, Utah, on August 8, 1952, the youngest daughter of L.C. “Al” and Trilva Riggs Poppell.
She grew up in Roy, Utah and also lived for a short time in Morocco and Okinawa as a young girl. Summer graduated from Roy High School in 1970.
She married her husband Myron Shayne Loewenstein in Ogden on April 26, 1969 and they made their home in Ogden Valley. Together they had two children Lancer and Autumn.
Summer worked at Powder Mountain Ski Resort, Jackson Distributing, Rich Grant Trucking, Omega Consultants, and retired from the Internal Revenue Service.
Summer’s health was a never ending battle since the age of 10. At 36 she underwent a kidney transplant, receiving a kidney from her mother Trilva. Her will to live and fight her diseases was inspiring to those who knew her including her physicians. To us she will always be the healthiest-unhealthiest person we know.
She had a special bond with animals and was happiest spending her days on her ranch in Liberty, walking her 3 pitbulls, and working with her horses. She loved to garden, ski, and swim, and was an avid horseman. Her greatest love was taking care of her family.
Summer loved her friends and will be remembered for her tenacious spirit, her beautiful smile, and her contagious laugh.
The family would like to thank Dr. Harry Senekjian for his wonderful care of Summer the past 30 years, Dr. Mariam Nasiff, and the doctors, nurses, and staff of McKay-Dee Intensive Care.
Summer is survived by her husband, Shayne; daughter, Autumn (Richard) Douglas; two grandsons, Lancer and Ryker; sisters, Paula Bowman and Holly Hansen; and many nieces and nephews. She had a special bond and friendship with her oldest niece, Kelly Bowman, whom she considered a sister. She was preceded in death by her parents and her infant son, Lancer.
“I heard somebody define heaven once” she said looking at Pearl “as a place where when you get there, all the dogs you have ever loved run to greet you.” Robert Parker
