Susie Goddard Hulet
May 9, 1952 - October 23, 2014
Like a warm day of sunshine, Susie made people feel happy. With her big smile, contagious laugh and joyous outlook on life, she lit up every occasion. She was fun! No wonder she had so many friends.
Susie was born May 9, 1952 to John B. Goddard, a father dedicated to making her feel secure and Geraldine W. Goddard, a mother devoted to family. She grew up beneath the shadow of Malan’s Peak in Ogden playing in the woods and hiking the hills. From there grew her lifelong interest in nature and her enthusiasm for outdoor adventures.
She graduated from Ogden High School and from the University of Utah with a degree in business. Soon afterwards, she co-founded a greeting card company, Swizzle Cards, with her roommate in hopes of becoming the next Hallmark. That creativity and artistic talent ultimately led to a long career in marketing with United Savings Bank and its affiliated companies.
In her twenties she became interested in the practice of Transcendental Meditation and in the teachings of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. It was through the TM program that Susie met Elliot J. Hulet, her best friend and husband of 35 years. Together they practiced the TM technique and followed Maharishi’s recommendations for living a healthy, joyful life.
Tiny and very fit, Susie seemed to have boundless energy. Afraid she might miss a fun adventure, she rarely turned down an invitation. As a result, she hiked and biked around the world, exploring the planet with friends and family, adopting new friends all along the way. Her interests were diverse - art, music, rocks, history, little stray dogs, interior design, cooking, ancient Native American cultures, and more. She adored the red rock country of Utah and four corners region but was most content “up north” at her cabin in Island Park or at the Bear Paw in Montana.
Susie was passionate about nature and the need to care for the planet and all of its inhabitants. She and Elliot became involved with the Ogden Nature Center, whose mission is to educate and inspire others about the wonders of the natural world. They gave generously of their time and talent to ONC as well to Weber Pathways, an organization creating trails around the city of Ogden for families to enjoy. In recent years she worked with the Environmental Initiatives Committee at Weber State University on ways to educate students about the environmental challenges facing us today and how they can make a difference. Her dream was for the creation of a Sustainability Practice and Research Center on campus.
Susie loved and cared for the people in her life, often delivering unexpected treats like Elliot’s homemade muffins, a rhubarb pie, or meyer lemons from her father’s garden. Perhaps her greatest talent was as a “connector” or networker. She delighted in connecting individuals with shared interests to one another.
She is survived by her husband Elliot J. Hulet, father John B. Goddard, her sister Mary Ann Garner (Don), her two brothers Kelly Goddard (Kathy), Chris Goddard (Bev), nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Geraldine W. Goddard.
A Tribute to her life will be held on October 30, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the Alumni Center, Weber State University Campus, 1235 East 4100 South, Ogden. Friends and family can gather an hour before and after. An Open House celebrating her life, her last party, will be held at the same location on November 1, 2014 between 5 and 7 p.m.
No flowers please. Consider instead a donation to Weber State University for the Susie G. Hulet Sustainability Internship Fund. Arrangements entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.
