11/10/1919 ~ 11-22/2013
Tadayoshi “Toddy” Sameshima, 94, passed away on Friday, November 22, 2013 at Mt. Ogden Health & Rehabiliation Center from pneumonia.
He was born on November 10, 1919 in Spreckles, CA to Taizo and Kie Kato Sameshima. He was raised in Salinas, CA before moving to Gardena, CA. He graduated from Salinas Union High School in 1938. He registered with the Los Angeles County Draft Board during the second draft where it was discovered he had scar tissue on his lung, thus classifying him as 4-F and ineligible for service. On March 15, 1942 he left CA on the “Voluntary Evacuation Program” to relocate. He was able to assist Mr. Mori drive a caravan of trucks to Salt Lake City, UT area before moving to Kersey, CO to be with his family.
He married Amy Yei on August 17, 1945 in Ogden, UT. She preceded him in death on January 7, 2007.
As a youth he was a Boy Scout in a CA troop. As an adult, he was active in the Boy Scout Troop for Ogden Buddhist Church. He served as an Asst. Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, and Committee Chairman.
In his younger years, he was an active member of the Ogden Buddhist Church. He served on many committees as well as the church board.
He was an avid fisherman, hunter, and gardener. Many people were the lucky recipients of his bountiful gardens. He also enjoyed stamp collecting and entered many exhibits. One of his favorite accomplishments was shooting his 5-point elk. The elk as so large the horse refused to haul it back to camp and he had to get a 2nd horse to retrieve it.
He worked for many years at Williamson Trucking Co. driving semi-trucks until 1957 when he went to work for Herrick Industrial Supply Co. as a pricing clerk for 51 years. Many people will also remember him as the jovial cashier at The Bamboo Noodle Parlor located on Grant Ave in Ogden. Once he “retired” from Herrick’s, he continued working part time with them and also took a part time job with Jimmy’s Flower Shop for the next 20 years. He finally fully retired in 2011 at the age of 91.
