TERUO (TED) KARIYA
1928-2014
Teruo (Ted) Kariya, born January 12, 1928, died peacefully in his sleep during the early hours of September 24, 2014, after a decline in health due to old age.
Ted was the seventh of ten children born to Shozo and Tama Kariya, in Layton, Utah. Ted spent much of his early life working on the family farm and at the family restaurant, Kay’s Noodle Parlor (Ogden) and the Mukai family restaurant. Ted was known as a remarkably hard worker with a tender heart and an unparalleled love for animals. He was a happy man who loved the simple things in life: fishing, camping, old Western movies, the Utah Jazz and the family dogs.
Ted loved hard work and was happiest when he had a job to do each day. He spent the last 15 years working at Enable Utah in Ogden, where his strong work ethic, ability to make instant friends and infectious smile brightened the lives of those around him. Ted will truly be missed by all who knew him.
Ted is survived by three sisters: Yoshiko Mori, Hawaii; Yaeko Kuntz, Wisconsin; Kiyoko Sipes, Layton; one brother, Haruo Kariya, Salt Lake City; and Gloria Kariya his sister-in-law, guardian, champion, and friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers (Tatsuki, Shigeo, Thomas, Yoshio) and one sister (Hisaye).
Thanks and appreciation go to the loving staff at the Avalon Care Center in Bountiful who provided excellent care to Ted during the last few months of his life.
