Thelma Cabbagestalk departed this earthly life on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at Rocky Mountain Care Center, Clearfield, Utah at the age of 88.

Thelma was born in Sumter, South Carolina on February 24, 1928 and was the daughter of the late Cassie Cabbagestalk.  Thelma accepted Christ at an early age at the Antioch United Methodist Church in Sumter South Carolina where she was an active member.

After completing her basic education Thelma moved to New York City in the early forties to seek educational advancement.  Thelma graduated from Girls High School Brooklyn, New York and attended Drake Business School.  She moved to Springfield Gardens Queens Long Island, New York  in 1959.

Thelma was an active member of the Springfield Gardens United Methodist Church Springfield Gardens New York up until moving to Layton, Utah April 2014.  Thelma served as a class leader.  Thelma was part of the United Methodist Women, Gospel Choir, Finance Committee and Annual Senior Dinner Committee.  She was a recipient of numerous awards including the State of New York “Legislative Resolution” for community service.

Thelma and her sister Hattie established the Inner Circle of Springfield Garden United Methodist Church and “A Kaleidoscope of Fashion.”  Each year this organization produced a fashion show designed to build self-esteem and showcase the talents of young people.  This annual gala event help raise thousands of dollars, which were contributed to community outreach.  She served as Executive Producer for 30 consecutive years.

Thelma retired from the social concern Vendor Agency, Inc. where she was employed as a Personnel Specialist.

Thelma was a volunteer for the Democratic Party in her community.  In 1963 Thelma attended the March on Washington where Dr. Martin Luther King gave his famous “I Have A Dream Speech.”

Thelma was preceded in death by her mother, Cassie Cabbagestalk, sister Hattie Cabbagestalk, two brothers LeRoy and Howard Cabbagestalk, one niece Linda F. Harrison, one nephew Gary L. Cabbagestalk.  Thelma leaves to cherish her memoires her sister Frankie A. Draidfort, Layton, Utah; sister-in-law, Roslyn Cabbagestalk, Bronx, NY; two nieces Angela McGee, Layton, Utah; Cynthia Cabbagestalk, Lakeland, FL; three great nieces, Whitney Cabbagestalk, Maplewood, NJ; Ashley and Kelsey Cabbagestalk, Lakeland, FL; two nephews, Darryl Cabbagestalk (Nedra), Maplewood, NJ; Norman K. Draidfort, Layton, Utah; two great-nephews, Michael L. McGee, Layton, Utah; Myles Cabbagestalk, Maplewood, NJ; Godchild Claudette Dowdy (Milton), Cathage, NC; special friend Ernestine Washington, Springfield Gardens, NY; cosuins, Shirley Luck, Michelle Luck Harper, Sydnie and Shelbi Harper, Brooklyn, NY; and Hattie Simonson, Carthage, NC; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at the Springfield Gardens United Methodist Church, Springfield Gardens, NY; Wednesday, December 28, 2016.  Viewing at 10:00 to11:00 a.m.   Funeral services at 11:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
