Theodore “Ted” Matsushima, 85, passed away Friday, August 31, 2007 at Washington Terrace Rehabilitation Center, of causes incident to age.
He was born June 1, 1922 in Orange County, California to Sukito and Fusae Ishii Matsushima. He graduated from Narbonne High School in Lomita, California in 1940. He then attended the University of Southern California under a full academic scholarship.
In 1942, he and his family evacuated from Southern California to Deweyville, Utah then to Ogden, Utah.
Ted was inducted into the United States Army in August of 1944. He served as a translator in the Military Intelligence Service in the Pacific Theatre of Operations and in Korea with the U.S. Occupation Forces. He was discharged in August of 1946 and returned to Ogden.
On February 14, 1947, Ted married Mary Oda in Ogden, Utah. They were married for 60 years.
He was employed by the U. S. Air Force at Hill Air Force Base for 34 years in the storage branch as a supervisor, retiring in 1980.
Ted was an avid golfer and sports enthusiast. He attended local sporting events including, Weber State football and basketball games. His other interests were gardening, traveling, music, taking his dog, Hero, for walks, and photography. He also served as an AARP tax assistance volunteer.
His unique talent as a vocalist enabled him to serve with the South Ogden Senior Citizens sing along group and to sing for many church functions and funeral services.
Ted was a member of the Ogden Japanese Church where he served as an Elder and board member.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Edith M. Yei.
Ted is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Louise (Chris) Lund, New York City, NY: sons, Milt Matsushima, West Jordan; Brian R. Matsushima, Ogden; Joe R. Matsushima, Ogden; sister, Ruth M. Oda, Ogden; and two grandsons, Chris T. and Noah K. Lund, San Francisco, CA.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 7th at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
Friends and family may call Friday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., at the mortuary.
