Thomas Howard Burton passed away from natural causes on Wednesday, January 15th, 2020. We are grateful that he is no longer suffering and in pain. We would like to thank Heartwood Hospice and Home Care Assistance for their help and assistance in caring for Tom during those last two weeks of Tom's life.
Tom was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 25th, 1937 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Howard Thompson Burton and Leone Risley Burton. He grew up in Salt Lake City and graduated from Granite High School. He and his sister, Marilyn were very close throughout their lives. When she was diagnosed with kidney disease and needed a new kidney in 1991, he was happy to oblige.
At the age of 18 in 1955, Tom joined the US Navy Reserve. He enlisted because he had a deep love of our country and felt an obligation to serve as well as a thirst for adventure. For Tom, the ocean was a place of tranquility and peace.
Tom married Jonna Mae Conley on December 1st, 1956. They had four children together, John Thomas, Erin Jean, Laurie Ann and James Howard Burton. They later divorced.
In 1966 Tom began his career at Hill Air Force Base in Utah and eventually retired from his work there in 1993. He started as a photographic/electronic equipment specialist and would eventually go on to computer programming.
Tom was always a very hard worker. As a second job, he joined Layton City in 1968 working as a dispatcher, darkroom technician and computer consultant for the Layton Police Department. He really enjoyed this job. He loved serving the community and helping people in times of crisis.
On August 9th, 1980 Tom married Maurene Fausett in Kaysville, Utah. They spent 39 wonderful years together and enjoyed traveling, camping and making memories together.
Tom enjoyed the outdoors, deer hunting throughout the Utah Mountains with his sister and her husband. (Marilyn and Dave Hughes). He loved snowmobiling with his family, mostly in the Uinta Mountains above Kamas.
Tom's sense of humor was an endearing personality trait that outlasted his memories as he suffered with Alzheimer's, often making jokes while receiving medical care. Tom's smile, laughter and practical jokes will be missed.
Tom was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities throughout his life. He treasured his testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Tom is preceded in death by his father, Howard Thompson Burton, his mother, Leone Risley Burton, his sister, Marilyn Burton Hughes and his brother-in-law, Dave Hughes.
