Thomas Leland Frost
KAYSVILLE a" Respected and beloved husband, father and grandfather, Thomas Leland Frost died November 15, 2008 at his home after a long and healthy life. Leland was born May 17, 1912 in Ephraim to James Christian and Annie Peterson Frost. He graduated from Snow College, BYU, and Pacific University, earning degrees in chemistry, pharmacy, and optometry. He taught chemistry and physics at Davis High School before beginning his lifelong professional pursuits, and instilled through his example, a standard for educational excellence and constant learning in his family.
He was an accomplished pianist. Leland established an orchestra, Lee Frost and the Nationals, which filled large dance halls of the past with music. In his declining years, he could still play his unique arrangements. His musical talents were shared with his church and community.
Leland married Ruth Snow in Portland, Oregon, December 28, 1937. Upon completion of educational pursuits there, they returned to Utah and were sealed in the Manti Temple on August 29, 1938. Ruth had an exceptional singing voice and together they made beautiful music, which they shared with their family and others.
They raised five children and contributed to the community of Kaysville. He co-owned Frost Drug, which was a vibrant center of an earlier main street. Layton Drug was later established. His primary profession was optometry. He began his career with Standard Optical; later with his son, Jim and others he established Optical Associates in Ogden. He exemplified an admirable work ethic, as he also maintained an east Kaysville orchard.
The LDS church was at the center of his faith. He was a student and teacher of its doctrine, and served in many callings. With his wife Ruth, he served an LDS mission in the Tulsa Oklahoma Mission.
Leland had an enduring talent for recounting stories, along with a quick wit. He enjoyed community associations, principally the Rotary Club.
He will rejoin his wife, Ruth, who preceded his death. His surviving children include Frances Ann of Sandy; James Leland (Linda) of Kaysville; Barbara (Mrs. Michael Soulier) of Salt Lake City; Lisa (Mrs. William Wirthlin) of Salt Lake City and Thomas Spencer of Farmington. Also surviving him are 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to express appreciation to Missa Simpers and her family for their loving care of their father. Alpine Hospice provided helpful support during his passing. Private funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at the Kaysville Canyon Woods chapel, 1085 North 50 East (Mutton Hollow Road.)
