Thomas “Tom” Frank Stewart, age 88, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025, from natural causes.
Born August 25, 1936, in Louisville, KY, he was the son of Myrtle and Vance Stewart. He graduated from Male High School where he was a clarinetist in the school marching band which participated in President Eisenhauer’s inauguration. He attended and graduated from the University of Louisville – Cardinals.
Tom married Mary Jane Marlin in 1957, and they were about to celebrate 68 years of marriage on May 11, 2025. They met on a blind date and married young at 20 and 18. Always having a love to travel, Tom and Jane went to Spain to visit a relative who lived there and took the opportunity to visit several other places, enjoying the differences in lifestyles to those in the U.S.
He liked exploring every chance he had, putting the kids in the car, and just taking off. One of his favorite places to visit was Douglas Lake, Michigan.
Tom and Jane had two children, Diane Elizabeth Stewart (Dale Southard) of Salt Lake City and Glenn Thomas (Linda) Stewart of Layton. He is also survived by his wife, Mary Jane Stewart; grandson, Shane Walton (Stacy) Owens; and great-grandchildren, Jordan Cheney (Deja) Owens and Nathan Levi Owens. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Jesse Grant Owens.
After graduating from the University of Louisville, Tom went to work for the Federal Government. His job as a computer analyst took him to Dayton and Columbus, Ohio and finally to Ogden, Utah, where he retired.
He greatly enjoyed watching golf and NCAA College Basketball, the Super Bowl and various other sports. He took up skiing after moving to Utah and thoroughly enjoyed it. Tom had a fondness for animals and usually had a pet dog, mostly rescues. He thought pets always make life a little more enjoyable. His later years were spent doing whatever caught his fancy, and always learning new things, and meeting interesting people, dining out and trying new foods, traveling, etc.
Tom will be remembered for his dry sense of humor which often caught people off guard.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a light luncheon to follow at the Community Center at Lindquist’s Office Building, 3434 Washington Blvd.
Many thanks to the nursing and social work staff at Ogden Regional Medical Center and Bristol Hospice for providing such good care to Tom.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Tom’s name to the Humane Society of Utah or Best Friends of Utah.
