Tokiye Miya

Our dearest mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend Tokiye Miya passed away peacefully at her home on February 10, 2017.  She was surrounded by so many loved ones who provided her with such tender care over the years.

Tokiye was born in Clinton, Utah on February 14, 1927 to Yoshikichi and Fumi Miyagishima. She returned to Japan to go to school in Shizuoka where she was an outstanding athlete in track and table tennis.  Following the end of World War II, Tokiye moved back to the United States.  She married Sadao Sam Miya in Los Angeles, California on Jan 31, 1952.  Together, they moved to Utah and lived and farmed in Warren.  Sam and his brothers operated a construction company with the farm in Warren being the base.  Tokiye maintained the home and often found herself involved in some aspect of the family business.  After nearly 40 years in construction, Sam and Tokiye retired and moved to Layton.  In retirement, they were able to travel extensively with their friends and saw many beautiful places – many European countries, China, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, the Caribbean, and Japan.

Tokiye enjoyed gardening, cooking, and watching Japanese TV.  She donated many hours to volunteering her services to Bonneville High School.  She cheered for the Lakers on many occasions and attended many events there.  Her love of sports was evident as she was a fan of the Utah Jazz and Weber State.  She was a member of the Ogden Buddhist Church and the Ogden Fujin-kai.  Tokiye was the kindest and the sweetest.  She would always worry about others and their happiness well before her own.  Her compassion for all is something that we should all emulate.

She is survived by her daughter, Mae of Layton, grandson Adam (Hyun Ah) of North Salt Lake, son Arnold of Denver, granddaughter Kate of Denver, and sister Hisaye Ichikawa of Shizuoka, Japan.Preceding her in death – Husband Sadao Miya, parents, brother Yoshisada (Yuriko), sister Utaye (Kiromitsu) Kubota, and brother-in-law Fujio Ichikawa.

We would like to thank the staff of Encompass Hospice especially Dr. Seth Lewis, Tammy Buckway, Lori Carrigan, Valerie Buckway, and Angie Buckway for their compassionate care.

Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to the members of “Team Toki” -  Michael Dickens, Yanett Zamora, Kelsey Bate Brandley, Sadye Thompson, Bailey Roubinet, and Nikole Williams. Your love for Mom was deep and true.  Thank you for making her happy.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Ogden Buddhist Temple, 155 North Street, Ogden.  Friends may visit family on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Tuesday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the Temple.  Interment, Ogden City Cemetery.
