Una Southard Wickes, (Mrs. Elbert A. Wickes), was born November 28, 1912, in New York City, daughter of Edward Charles and Magdalene Katherine (Waltman) Southard.
She married Elbert A. Wickes of Lamoni, Iowa, on December 20, 1941. Elbert was the son of Charles A. and Minna A. (Newsman) Wickes. They resided at 141 N Bonnie Ave., Pasadena, CA, 91106. She later moved to Utah in 1980, where she continued her interest in sports, banjo, and service to the community.
She was a member of the Royal Greens Golf Club, Davis County Golf and Golf City. She continued banjo lessons with Mike Iverson and performed with the Utah Old Time Fiddlers and in hospitals and schools with Mark Livingston and Alice Cipollini. Una continued to swim and golf at least three times a week until the past two years.
She was a non-denominational Christian.
Una was an educator. Her formal education included: B.S. Boston University in 1934; M.Ed. UCLA in 1951, and Ed.D. in 1957.
As an educator, Una worked in a variety of positions. She was a physical education instructor at Friends Academy, Locust Valley, N.Y. 1934-36; Brearley School, N.Y.C. 1936-41; head of the Physical Education Department at Staten Island Day School, N.Y. 1942-43; Springside School, Chestnut Hill Phil, 1943-48; Westlake School for Girls, Los Angeles 1948-49; instructor for health education and physical education at Pasadena City College 1949-54; coordinating guidance counselor at Pasadena High School in Calif. 1954-58; Registrar 1958-59; Assistant Principal 1959; Chairperson in the Office of Educational Relations Pasadena Chapter A.R.C. 1963; and a Swimming, Life Saving and Water Safety Instructor.
Una''s professional affiliations included membership in the American Academy of Politics and Social Science; Am. Personnel and Guidance Assn; Nat. Vocational Guidance Assn. Secondary School Principals; Calif. Teachers Assn; Cal Assn. Secondary School Administrators; Pasadena Education Assn; National Congress of Parents and Teachers, Pi Lambda Theta; and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was also a member of the Pasadena Athletic Club. Una was also listed in the Who''s Who of American Women 1965-66 and 1966-67.
"Analysis and Assessment of the Pasadena High School Guidance Program" was the subject of Una''s Ed.D. Dissertation. She also contributed to the California Journal of Secondary Education. In 1957, she was awarded the Honorary National Basketball Referee Rating.
Her hobbies included swimming, golfing, theatre arts and she played her banjos in local bands and nursing homes.
Una was preceded in death by her husband on November 30, 1975. She is survived by a niece, Ruth Malcolm, four step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 6th at 11:00 a.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. My life time friend and personal assistant, Mark Livingston will officiate.
Friends and family may call Friday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the mortuary.
