V. Linden Hurst
V. Linden Hurst passed away July 31, 2011, in Salt Lake City. He was born in Ogden, Utah on October 2, 1937 to Vard Linden and Myrtle Geneva Pierce Hurst. He married Darlene Nielson on August 16, 1961 in the Salt Lake Temple. He adored her and treated her like a queen.
Linden grew up in Ogden. He served in the Northern Mexico Mission of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish from the University of Utah and a Master’s Degree in Spanish from Indiana University. He also studied at the University of Salamanca in Barcelona, Spain.
Linden taught Spanish for nearly fifty years in the Granite School District and at Salt Lake Community College.
He enjoyed spending time with his family. Gardening, traveling, and baking were some of his interests. He and Darlene lived in Syracuse for the past thirteen years.
He served as Bishop of the Winder 4th Ward, and as a counselor in the Winder West Stake Presidency. He loved working as an ordinance worker in the Ogden Temple. He also enjoyed serving in many other church callings.
Linden is survived by his wife, Darlene, and his seven children: Cheri (Mike) Bullough of Centennial, CO; Ron (Patti), of Kaysville, UT; Beckie Flanagan of Syracuse, UT; Darin (Kari) of Draper, UT; David (Amy) of Riverton, UT; Annette (Jake) May of West Valley City; Lynette (Jim) Zaugg of Syracuse, UT, 26 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by five brothers and sisters: Julaine (John) Moore, Janet Gardiner, Roger (Anita), Ralph (Barbara), Pat (Steve) Carver, and also many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 4, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Syracuse South Stake Center, 3065 S. Bluff Road. Friends may visit family on Wednesday, August 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road and on Thursday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.
