Vanda Lewis

Vanda Carter Lewis began her adventure on earth on July 28, 1925 in Porterville, Utah. She "graduated" to her next adventure on September 21, 2019 while residing at the Sunrise Senior Living Center in Sandy, Utah.

She was the 3rd of 7 children born to Thomas Samuel Carter and Bessie Pollow White.  She spent her childhood and youth in Porterville and graduated from Morgan High School where she was a student body officer.

During World War II, she worked as a secretary at Hill Air Force Base.  When the war ended, she continued her education, attended Weber State, and Brigham Young University.  She lived in the Los Angeles area for a brief time, and when she came home for Christmas, got engaged and moved to Salt Lake City.  She worked for the State of Utah, and until her marriage, lived at the Lion House when it was a dormitory for single women.

She married Gene Eskil Lewis on March 17, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple.  They had 3 children, and one of her greatest joys was being "Mom".   After marriage she lived in Salt Lake City, Bountiful, and Sandy, UT; Glasgow and Billings, MT; Redwood City and San Mateo, CA; and Littleton, CO.

She loved music and shared her love by teaching piano and organ to many students over a span of decades.  Vanda was an active member and served in leadership positions in both the Colorado and Utah Music Teachers Associations.   She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and contributed to her church by serving in many positions on the ward and stake levels.  She also served as a Bountiful Utah Temple worker and was a member of the Colorado Mormon Chorale.  She was a dedicated member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and was often an officer in her local camp.

She loved her family and always saw the best in them.  One of her favorite things to do on family camping trips was to take everyone on a nature hike.  She enjoyed attending the theater and the symphony.   Vanda loved to read and took advantage of opportunities to continue learning.

She is survived by her two sisters: Pauline Carter and Dena (Ivan) Rich; her children:  two daughters, Sandra (Laszlo) Preysz, Sherry Brown; and one son, Gordon Carter Lewis; 5 grandchildren, Valerie Brown, Monika Preysz, Heidi Preston, Matthew Preysz, and Vanessa Sthole; and 9 great grandchildren.  Those who "graduated" before her include:  Husband, Gene, her parents, and her siblings, Barbara Porter, Marvin Carter, Colleen Carter and Helen Johnson.

Family, relatives, and friends are welcome to attend her visitation which will be held on Thursday, September 26, 2019 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N 400 E in Bountiful, Utah. The funeral will be at the Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary on Friday, September 27 at 11:00 AM with a visitation proceeding from 9:30 - 10:30 AM. Interment will be at the South Morgan Cemetery.
