VeLoy ‘Loni’ Whiting Gregson
VeLoy ‘Loni’ Gregson passed away January 26, 2017. She was born April 12, 1945 in Roosevelt, Duchesne County, Utah, the sixth child and third daughter of Geneva Lenora Olsen and Harold Christopher Whiting. She graduated from Union High School in Roosevelt, Utah and was a four year LDS Seminary graduate. The fall of l963 she attended the LDS Business College on South Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah.
VeLoy married on June 7, 1965 and was greatly blessed with four beautiful daughters; Annette Kristine Argyle, Deborah Lin Davis, Malinda Kay Dustin, and Maria VeLoy Burleigh. After nearly 25 years, that marriage ended in divorce.
On November 21, 1996 VeLoy married Greg Gregson. They were sealed in the Ogden, Utah LDS Temple on April 20, 2002. Loni often said, “When I married Greg I finally found my True North. I came HOME!”
VeLoy spent her childhood on the family dairy farm (100 acres) in North-Eastern Utah, a small town, Neola, Duchesne County. She had a special love for horses, spending many years riding her horse, Patty. A neighbor warned her parents, “If you don’t stop that girl from taking chances in making that horse do such things, she is going to get killed!”
While raising her children she joined the Brigham City fast pitch softball league, playing center field until she was 48 years old. She enjoyed reading non-fiction works, going to Broadway productions and spending quiet days with Greg.
A lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she taught Primary, YWMIA, Relief Society and Sunday School. She also worked in the YW sports programs in the ward and was the Stake sports specialist. Her favorite church service was teaching the Gospel Doctrine class in the Willard 1st Ward. She testified many times that she was born with a testimony of Christ which did not waver in spite of adversity.
VeLoy was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Harold LiDell and Merrill “J” and one sister, Renae W. Hancock.
Loni commented, “I can’t count my life as any value to myself, only that I finished the course. I’ve come too far to give up now.” She said, “When the day comes that I can leave the physical bonds of this earth, one of the first things I want to do is run again and then call for my beloved Patty.”
