VeOra Gilson Houston

March 4, 1935 — October 11, 2023

VeOra Gilson Houston, 88, passed away October 11, 2023, at The Peaks at Clinton Memory Care Center, surrounded by loved ones.

VeOra was born March 4, 1935, in Santaquin, Utah to James Stanley Gilson and Helen Verda York. She attended Payson High School and graduated from Provo High School.

Vee started working at Hill Air Force Base and there she met “the most handsome young man, tall and slender with beautiful brown eyes and thick dark hair.” She married that handsome young man, Shirel Boyd Houston on February 17, 1956, in Provo, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on April 27, 1962. They are the parents of five children. They raised their family in Layton, Utah, where they lived for over 60 years. The family also lived in Germany for 3 years.

Vee was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She and her eternal companion served a mission in Zurich Switzerland. Vee served in numerous positions for the church, Relief Society president, Young Women’s President, ward choir director and music director, Sports director, various teaching and other callings. She enjoyed working with the Young Women and going to Girls Camp for many years. She participated in many roadshows, plays and other activities where her talents shined.

As a young girl Vee gained an appreciation for literature, music and the marvelous beauties of nature. She wrote many roadshow programs, Christmas Cantatas, family programs, poems and stories over the years.

She enjoyed participating in sports and loved watching her beloved BYU Cougars! She loved to bowl and bowled with her husband on night leagues and on women’s leagues during the day. She belonged to a pinochle group that met once a month for over 50 years. She worked in  the money counting department at Lagoon for over twenty plus years and made many good friends there.

Vee loved her family and loved getting together for any occasion. She loved sharing little thoughts and stories. She would even call her children and grandchildren and tell them to go look at the moon and know that she was looking at the same moon!

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one brother, one sister and a great-grandson. She is survived by her children Marla and Cole Davis (Arizona), Lynda and Jan Christensen (Utah), Jeffrey Houston (California), Douglas and Chenelle Houston (Utah), Shirlene and Marvin Rogers (Utah), 16 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren, her sister Marge and two brothers, J.N.
