Vera Rogers Harrison, 94, formerly of Vernal, Utah passed away on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 in Centerville, Utah. She was born at the home of her maternal grandparents in Vernal, Utah March 20, 1916 to Marion Philemon Rogers and Elizabeth Kidd Rogers. She grew up in Leota, Utah in the Ouray Valley. When she was 10 years old, she and her seven siblings were sealed to their parents in the Manti LDS TempleHer first eight years of education were in a one room schoolhouse. Despite several setbacks with illness her junior year, she persevered and graduated from Alterra High School near Roosevelt, Utah. She was the first student to graduate from LDS Seminary at Alterra High. Because she was the only one, she went to Roosevelt to participate with the seminary graduates there.On March 20, 1940, Vera married Heber Kenneth Harrison in the Salt Lake Temple. They celebrated their 60th anniversary a few months before he passed away, almost 10 years ago to the day of Vera''s death. With their home being on US 40 next to the Naples Ward Chapel, their bountiful gardens were often the subject of conversation. Vera canned lots of food from those gardens over the years. She also loved growing flowers.Active in the LDS Church, Vera held many positions. She was a visiting teacher, Primary teacher, Young Women''s Ward and Stake Secretary, Relief Society Inservice Leader, and a ward librarian (which she did for 20 years). Her hobbies included gardening, quilting, genealogy, crocheting, writing poetry and sewing. Her family and their needs always came first. She worked hard and sacrificed much so her children could get a good education and her sons could serve church missions.Vera is survived by her daughters, Dorothy (Ray) Jones of Phoenix, Arizona and Verda (Randy) Wilkinson of Bella Vista, Arkansas; son, Val Heber (Catherine) Harrison, Bountiful, Utah; daughter-in-law, Lynda Harrison of Centerville, Utah; twenty-three grandchildren; sixty-eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Other survivors include two brothers, Ivan (Afton) Rogers of Randlett, Utah and Rondle (Anna Fay) Rogers of Vernal, Utah; sister-in-law, Jean Rogers of Salt Lake City, Utah; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her eternal companion, Heber Kenneth Harrison; two sons, Gerald Clifton Harrison and Roger Kenneth Harrison; one great-grandson, Christian Andrew White; brothers, Leonard, Raymond, and Norman Rogers; and sister Albertha (Bertha) Ferguson and Althea (Thea) Bodily.Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 5, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Centerville 5th Ward Chapel, 270 N. 300 E. Centerville, Utah. A public viewing will be held prior to the services from 9:30- 10:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Vernal City Cemetery with a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 6, 2010.The family expresses heartfelt thanks to Beehive Homes of Centerville and Hospice for Utah and all who have assisted Vera the past few years.
