NORTH OGDEN – Verena Elaine Stauffer Moyes, age 88, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Thursday, May 12, 2011.
She was born August 7, 1922 in Brigham City, Utah, a daughter of pioneer stock Ernest Stauffer and Hazel Gibbs. She moved to Perry when she was five years old. She attended Perry Schools and graduated from Box Elder High School, where she met her husband, Frank Moyes. In high school she was active in music and drama. Through her later years she could recite poetry readings from high school English.
Elaine loved music, especially classical. She had a beautiful soprano voice and sang in many duets and trios. She served 12 years on the Symphony Board. She was a talented seamstress, and her family benefitted from her many talents throughout the years. She was also an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking and entertaining for many family gatherings.
Elaine worked in her parents grocery stores in Perry and Ogden. Soon after her marriage to Frank Harvey Moyes on October 1, 1941 her husband left to serve for three years in the Pacific during World War II. Upon his return, she and Frank opened Moyes Glass where she served as office manager into her 70’s. She also served as President of Weber Basin Homebuilders Women’s Association.
She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her callings included Ward and Stake Relief Society President, Primary President, teacher and chorister.
She spent the last years of her life enjoying her grandchildren, supporting them in church and sports activities. She enjoyed participating in her Ben Lomond Literary Club. Her home was a hub of activities creating fond memories for her 19 grandchildren. She said her children were her most important job and loved every minute of it.
Surviving are her five children, Andrea (Rick) Favero, Melanie (Alan) Lewis, Lance (Jolie) Moyes, Shannon (Rodney) Andersen, Heather (Rex) Coleman; 19 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two siblings.
Graveside services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Ben Lomond Cemetery.
