Verl LeRoy Gessel, 95, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 of causes incident to age. He was born on April 7, 1923 in Providence, Utah to Henry Brandt and Edna May (Frederick) Gessel.

Verl was raised in Spokane, Washington, with his three older brothers and his younger sister. He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School where he was a member of the Engineer’s Club.

Our husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather provided valiant and honorable service to his country, his family, his church, and his community.

He began his military service in 1942 and, among many varied assignments, participated with the Seventh Army in World War II in Europe in 1945, earning a Purple Heart.

In 1950 Verl earned the degree of Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Idaho.

He married Patricia Orme on July 11, 1952 in the Logan LDS Temple.Together they raised their four children and taught them the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the value of honest work. Verl served in many capacities as he actively participated in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Once the children were raised, he left his home with Patricia to serve in 1994 to 1995 in the Utah Salt Lake City Family History Mission.

In 1958 Verl established his own architectural practice and was well-respected by school, community, and church leaders for his ethical business practices, design excellence, and thorough project supervision for well over two decades. He served on the South Ogden City Council, Planning Commission, and Board of Adjustment. He was also the trustee and chairman of the Uintah Highlands Water Board and a member of the Advisory Committee for Weber County School District Vocational Education.

Above all, Verl cherished his “Precious Patricia” and his “Forever Family.” He is survived by his precious wife, Patricia; his two sons, Raymond (Laurie) and Alan (Ann); his daughter, Bonnie (David) Felger; 14 grandchildren, and 31 great-grandchildren; and by his sister Marianne Bardsley.
