Verl Gaylen Williams

Verl Gaylen Williams, 89, passed away at home Friday, June 21, 2013. He was born December 11, 1923, to Vernal and Bergeta Jesperson Williams in Tucson, Arizona. He married Beth Craig on November 29, 1942 in Layton, Utah. They were married for 64 years before her passing in 2006.

During WWII, Verl saw action as an aircraft engineer in the Army Air Corps. He flew missions out of the Philippines and New Guinea into Indo-China aboard a B26. Following the war, he worked in Arizona and New Mexico returning to Layton in 1950.

Verl worked at Hill AFB for almost 30 years, retiring in 1979 as Production Control Manager for the Minuteman Missile Weapon System. He was a longtime member and President of the Utah Air Force Association. He was also a member of the initial Board that founded the Layton Heritage Museum. He had many interests including auto racing, hunting, fishing and walking, but once he discovered golf in his sixties, it became his passion.

Verl was a member of the LDS Church, active with the youth and contributed time and resources in the initial construction of the Layton Stake camp in the Unitas.

He is survived by children Vern and Sue Williams and Kandy Williams Richards; grandchildren Guy, Chanin and Brittanie and great granddaughters Zoe and Katryna. Also surviving are his brother Blair and Margaret Williams and sisters Velda Harward and Carolyn and Kim Bargeron. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Beth, brothers Forrest and Dalvin Williams and sister Colleen Beeson.

A celebration of life will be held for friends and family on Friday, June 28, 2013 from 4:00-7:00 p.m.at 367 E. Gordon Avenue, Layton.
