September 29, 1933 ~ March 2, 2015

Verla Petersen Elwood, 81, passed away at home surrounded by family on Monday, March 2, 2015.  She was born on September 29, 1933 in Lewiston, Utah, the daughter of Leon Lars and Elpha Potter Petersen.  She grew up in Lewiston and moved to Ogden in 1958.  On October 16, 1959 she married Parley Elwood.  Their marriage was solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple on October 16, 1979.  Parley passed away on March 9, 1987.

Verla was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many callings.  She began her career with Mountain Bell in 1950 as a switchboard operator and worked her way into upper management before retiring in 1990.  She kept busy working as the office manager at Stegen’s Repair in lieu of retiring.

She was an avid Jazz fan, spent many hours volunteering for the Utah Telephone Pioneers, and was a patriotic voter.  Most of all she loved being a grandma.

Verla is survived by her daughters, Faye Dawn (Duaine) Jacobson, Willard and Kimberley Dawn (Shane) Stegen, Ogden; eight grandchildren, Holly, Mitchell, Bryce, Bradley, Darby, Nicholas, Mason, and Cache; 11 great-grandchildren with one on the way; sister, Linda Coates, Providence; and sister-in-law, Carol Petersen, Wheatridge, CO.  She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister, Sharol Connary; and brother, Larry J. Petersen.

The family would like to thank the IMC staff at McKay Hospital and the Peak Specialty Hospice Group, especially Annette Wood and Dr. Van Christiansen.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 9, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.  Friends may visit with family on Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary.  Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
