Verla Jane Steed Olsen, age 92, passed away peacefully at her home in Clearfield, Utah after a brief illness. She was born in Clearfield and continued living there in the home built by her parents Charles E. Steed and Mabel Flint Steed. Verla was the eighth of ten children. She graduated from Davis High School in 1942. During the war she worked at the Ogden Arsenal Ammunition Plant until she married Grant M. Olsen on February 17, 1944. The marriage spanned 68 years. Verla's home was the daily gathering place for several of her near-by brothers as well as for other family and friends. She always had baking at the ready for anyone who dropped by. Along with Grant, Verla enjoyed gardening on their large lot and camping in their trailer. For over twenty years they spent winters in Yuma, Arizona.
Verla is survived by her two sons, Allen (ilka) Olsen of Victoria, British Columbia and Reed (Suzanne) Olsen of Kaysville, Utah. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Whitnee (David) Evans of Syracuse, Utah and Riley Olsen of Kaysville, Utah. Two great-granddaughters, Adilynne Anne and Kaylee Jane Evans, two sisters-in-law, Pat Steed of Wenatchee, Washington and Afton Ficarra of North Ogden, Utah. Verla was preceded in death by her husband in 2012 and their son, Dean Olsen in 1945.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 26, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Clearfield City Cemetery, 1050 S. State Street, Clearfield. A luncheon is scheduled at noon at the LDS Church located at 151 S. 1000 W. in Clearfield.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made in Verla’s name to a favorite charity of choice.
