Vernal James Kinghorn
SOUTH OGDEN a" Vernal "Vern" James Kinghorn, 87, passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2010 in Layton, Utah.
Vern was born December 20, 1922, in Lewisville, Idaho, to Myrtle Jensen and William Ray Kinghorn.
After moving to California in 1940, Vern spent several years in the grocery business before joining the U.S. Army Air Corps (later called Air Force). He was in the Air Force for three years during World War II and was a flight engineer in a B-17 bomber that was shot down during a bombing mission. He was a P.O.W. for several months in Hungary, Romania and Russia. He was a lifelong member of the Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.).
After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, he was employed by Folgers Coffee Company in November of 1949. He was a salesman in Northern Utah, Southeastern Idaho and Western Wyoming. He continued selling coffee for Proctor and Gamble after they bought Folgers Coffee Company in 1963. He retired in 1988 after 41 years of service.
Vern married the love of his life, Opal M. Fitzpatrick, on February 25, 1950, in Ogden, Utah. They have three children, Colleen, Jim and Kenny. Vern and Opal had a wonderful life together and he missed her terribly after her death in April 2006.
Vern was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He loved camping, fishing and hunting with his brothers, sons, grandsons and nephews. He enjoyed working in his yard and keeping things painted and nice around the house. He loved to travel but especially loved the slot machines in Nevada.
He is survived by his children, Colleen (Jerry) Johnson, Syracuse; Jim Kinghorn, Layton; Kenny (Janet) Kinghorn, Clearfield; three granddaughters, four grandsons, four great-grandsons, one brother, Ron, and one sister, Lucille Cottle.
Vern was preceded in death by his wife, Opal, his parents, three brothers, Royal, Dell, and Casey; one sister, Marlene, and daughter-in-law, Sandy.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff and care givers of Hearts for Hospice and Apple Village Assisted Living for the care and friendship they gave him the last months of his life.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
Friends may call at the mortuary on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.
Interment will be at Lindquist''s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd., next to his beloved Opal.
