Vernon N. Perkins

NORTH OGDEN a€" Vernon N. Perkins, Master Sergeant US Army Retired, passed away at McKay Dee Hospital on September 25, 2012 of complications from pulmonary fibrosis.

He was born October 13, 1926 in Portsmouth, Virginia, son of James M. and Lizzie May Mize Perkins. He married Reba N. McDonald on August 13, 1949. Vernie joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on September 13, 1973, their marriage was later solemnized in the Ogden LDS Temple on June 6, 1975.

He was an active member of the North Ogden 13th Ward and had held various positions including Young Men''s Secretary, Ward Clerk, 1st and 2nd Counselor to the Bishop, Stake Executive Secretary for over 28 years and home teacher.

Vernie served in the US Merchant Marine as an Able Body Seaman during WWII, retired from the US Army after serving more than 22 years from 1946 to 1969. He was employed as an aircraft bearing inspector at the Defense Depot of Ogden from October 1969 to December 1991, at which time he retired after serving more than 47 years with the Federal Government. He was a member of the Association of the United States Army, Disabled American Veterans, the Retired Enlisted Association, American Legion and AARP.

He was happiest when he was serving others, his neighbors, his church and his country. His family is grateful for the good friends and community who have given their love and support over the years.

Vernie is survived by his daughter, Lola (John) Parker, Pleasant View; son, Donald N. (Kathy) Perkins of Mt. Clemens, Michigan; two grandchildren, Jonnie (Zach) Hartman and Trey (Sara) Parker and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Reba; parents, four brothers, three sisters and mother-in-law, Rubye Moore.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the North Ogden East Stake Center, 950 East 2850 North, North Ogden. Friends may visit with family on Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church. Arrangements entrusted to Lindquist''s North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 N. Washington Blvd. Interment, Ben Lomond Cemetery.
