CLEARFIELD - Vietta Sargent Steele, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 9, 2013, at Rocky Mountain Care Center in Clearfield, Utah. Born May 10, 1924, to James M. and Violet Jane Munson Sargent in Marysvale, Utah, she enjoyed riding her pony "Peanuts" and frolicking with her many siblings in a beautiful mountainous environment.
Vie married Harold Barker Steele on November 17, 1939. After "tripping in a movie theater and landing in his arms," the two became inseparable until his passing on Dec. 5, 1985. Their marriage was solemnized in the Ogden Temple in April 1979. Together, they raised two sons, David Harold (Sharon) Steele and Robert James Steele.
After graduating from Piute High, Vie worked in many venues, including the University of Utah Bookstore, George''s Market, Boyles Furniture, and Defense Depot Ogden, retiring from Iomega.
She was known for her generosity, her red-headed feisty spirit, and her dedication to helping others. If you did anything to help Vie, your kindness was returned tenfold. It was not uncommon for her to buy a sack of candy bars or donuts and turn around to "gift" them to the cashier.
A member of the Eagles, Vie also belonged to the Ogden Cosmopolitan Club where she served as president. She had many Filipino friends who counted her as "family."
A master homemaker, Vie loved traveling, mentoring those seeking employment, listening to music, and cooking. Family parties were not complete without Grandma''s shrimp dip and fried rice. The oldest grandchildren remember her pouring resin grapes. The younger ones remember her cutting those grapes apart years later to create huge "boulder" marbles. She had made pottery during her middle years and played the clarinet as a youth.
Vie went the extra mile in her callings as an LDS Primary Teacher, Visiting Teacher, and Baptismal Clothing Caretaker.
Among her greatest pleasures were her grandchildren who recall the many times she took them to Disney on Ice and the circus. Breakfast with Santa at ZCMI''s Tiffin Room was always special.
Vietta is survived by her children and 7 grandchildren: Jennifer (Brad) Christensen, Stacee (Troy) Jensen, Michael (Kandra) Steele, Matthew Steele, Christie Steele, Julie (Jared) Lloyd, and Kevin (Paige) Steele. In addition, she leaves behind 16 great-grandchildren and 6 sister-in-laws. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband (December 5, 1985), 4 brothers and 3 sisters.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road, Layton, Utah. Friends and family may visit from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. prior to services at the mortuary.
Interment, Clearfield City Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank Rocky Mountain Care Center for years of service in Vie''s behalf.
