Vincent “Jim” Toscan
RIVERDALE - Vincent (Jim) Toscan passed away in peace on March 17, 2008 at his home in Riverdale.
Jim was born in Ogden, Utah on October 28, 1918, the oldest son of Filippo and Anna Rossi Toscano. He attended Ogden High School, where he played the alto saxophone and football, both of which he enjoyed. After graduation he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad with his father and brother John, in Rock Springs and Green River, Wyoming.
Jim had a very strong duty to his family, his church and his country. He enlisted in the Navy and served two years and then changed to the Army where he served two more years from 1940 to 1944. After he was discharged he returned home to Ogden. He joined the Knights of Columbus at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Council 777 in 1940. He was very active in the Knights over the years and was honored as Knight of the Year by the Council.
When Jim returned to Ogden after the service, he found his love, Rose Louise Mark, and they were married at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on June 30, 1956. They lived in Riverdale on her family farm and had a son, Vincent Phillip on July 14, 1958. Jim and Rose were married 44 years when Rose passed away in 2002.
After his discharge from the Army, he attended technical school in California and became a machinist. Jim worked at Hill Field as a machinist and retired in 1982. After his retirement for the second time he went to work with his brother Tony at his pizza shop. This kept him busy and he enjoyed it very much.
Jim was especially proud of his two grandchildren Maria and Alan. They made him feel alive and young. He was especially proud of them as they became musicians and he enjoyed going to their concerts. He was also an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hiking into the little lakes and fishing, or out on the range hunting deer and antelope. One thing he loved to do and we did together as a family was fish. Jim was able to go to Canada, Alaska and Minnesota and fish in his retirement. The last trip to Alaska was his best, catching a 103 pound halibut at 85, what a smile.
He is survived by his son Vincent P. Toscan, Midvale; grandchildren Maria Emila Toscan, Taylorsville; and Alan Vincent Toscan, Phoenix, AZ; daughter-in-law Eve LeClaire, Midvale; brother Tony Toscan (Carolyn) of Ogden; four nieces and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by his wife Rose, brothers John Toscan, Dominic Toscan and his parents.
The family would especially like to thank Elaine Risen Hearts For Hospice for her care, as well as her husband Mike and their daughter Becky Kapinof, for their friendship and help when Jim needed it most. He really appreciated their help and friendship over the last several years.
