Viola Wilhelmina Stam Payne 1931 ~ 2012

Our cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend passed away peacefully on Monday, June 25, 2012 in Ogden, Utah. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Viola, "Lola", was born on February 24, 1931 to Adrianas "James" and Emmy Stam, in Santa Monica, CA. She grew up playing on the beaches of southern California. Her family later moved to Alameda, CA, where her parents opened a diner that became a local favorite. It was in the Bay Area where she met her future husband Melvin Stanley Payne. They were married on August 20, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple.

She worked at J.C. Penney''s for 35 years and was loved and admired by her fellow employees.

Lola was active in the LDS Church and served in many callings, her favorite as Young Women''s president, where she could stay close to the youth she so dearly loved. Her heart and home were open to all, and there are many who found solace in her love and friendship. She was not interested in diamonds and riches unless she could give them to her kiddies. She was "Mother" to numerous young people both in and out of the church.

Lola made hundreds of wedding cakes and was famous for her handmade Temple cake tops. She will also be loved and remembered for bringing the spirit and joy of Sinter Klaus to the hearts of many. She was very proud of her Dutch Heritage, and Lola honored her parents in passing the rich traditions to her children, grandchildren and all those who would share in the fun.

She is survived by her husband Mel, children Tom (Denise), Jan Ivan, Nena (Lee) Pace and Gretchen (David) Brimhall, brother Tom, sister Matena "Tena" Bush, 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Richard.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the West Point 8th Ward, 2865 W. 800 No. Friends may visit family Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment, West Jordan Cemetery.
