Viola Kirby Thompson, our loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend passed away Thursday, November 29, 2007 peacefully at Wasatch Care Center of causes incident to age. She was born March 20, 1922 in Hyde Park, Utah, the third and youngest child of James Irons Kirby and Margaret Jane Brown.
She attended school in Hyde Park, and graduated from North Cache High School and LDS Seminary. She was employed by the Logan Hospital, Bluebird Restaurant, Logan Knitting Factory, and Mode-O''Day in her early years.
She married Walter J Thompson on March 4, 1943 in the Logan LDS Temple. As a wartime couple, their first home was in Fairfield, California. Later they lived in Washington Terrace, and then Ogden. Walt passed away on October 4, 1984 in Ogden.
Viola was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and a member of the Mt. Lewis 1st Ward. She served many years as a Primary Teacher, Counselor, and Ward Primary President, Primary Stake Board member, and Relief Society Secretary. She was a faithful visiting teacher, and most recently served providing compassionate service to families at the passing of neighbors and ward members. She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, and was proud of her heritage. She served twice as a P.T.A. President.
Viola operated a home daycare center for more than 40 years, caring for hundreds of infants and children, whom she loved as her own.
Viola and Walt enjoyed square dancing, and were members of the Quarter Promenaders and Jubilee Ramblers. She loved traveling with her husband, children and extended family. She enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens, handicrafts, stitchery, reading, and her association in her literary club.
She is survived by her four sons, Terry L. (Gloria) Thompson, Great Falls, VA; Gary L. (Diane) Thompson, Plain City, UT; Randy J (Pauline) Thompson, North Ogden, UT; and Kevin D (Janna) Thompson, New Oxford, PA; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Viola was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, James Harvey Kirby, and sister, Leah Lavon Kirby McBride.
The family would like to thank the caring staffs at Gardens Assisted Living, Wasatch Care Center, and Legacy Hospice.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., with Bishop Brent Nielsen officiating.
Friends may call at the mortuary on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.
Interment, Lindquist''s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd.
