Virgil Lee Doan
Virgil Lee Doan, 87, of North Logan UT passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 24, 2017 from conditions incident to old age.
Born March 31, 1930 in Lower Salem, Ohio to Harry Lawrence Doan, Sr. and Nettie Marie Fickeisen, Virgil spent his youth in Ohio prior to enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1948 at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. He was transferred to Houston, TX where he met his future wife Sarah Ellen Jones.
Virgil and Sarah were married on August 1, 1953 and eventually welcomed six children to their family.
Virgil's career as a military officer took the family to many locations ending at Barksdale AFB in Bossier City, Louisiana. Following retirement in 1968, the family remained many years in Louisiana.
After serving a full-time LDS mission in England, Virgil and Sarah moved to Layton, UT in 1996, and in 2013 they moved to Pioneer Valley Lodge in North Logan.
In the Air Force, Virgil received extensive training in electronics then served in related assignments including electronic warfare officer on B-52 bomber crews. He flew missions during the Korean War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. After retiring as a Major, Virgil was employed for many years in electronics sales and service.
Virgil and Sarah were baptized in the LDS Church on a Caribbean beach in 1964 while they were at Ramey AFB in Puerto Rico. Their interest in the Church blossomed through close friendship with Ed and Elaine Mann. Ed and Virgil were members of the same bomber crew.
From this time forward Christian faith and church service were an important hallmark of Virgil's life.
He served three times as bishop, enjoyed family history and temple work, and cherished his missionary experience with Sarah in England.
In retirement Virgil developed woodworking talent to produce beautiful art pieces and toys for family and friends. He carefully fashioned Eagle Scout plaques, framed scenes from nature, animal toys, trains, block sets, and more.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and one sister, and he is survived by his wife Sarah, five brothers and two sisters. Virgil and Sarah's six children are living: Rodney, Bruce (Christine), Jennifer Daines (David), Jeffrey (Sabette), Dwight (Kristi) and Amy Bates (Stan).
There are 24 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren in Virgil and Sarah's family.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 30, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family Friday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
