Virginia Fern Tooley Cheney

April 7, 1921 ~ December 4, 2017

Virginia Fern Tooley Cheney, 96, peacefully passed away on December 4, 2017 in Eden, Utah.  She was born in Beaver, Boone County, Iowa on April 7, 1921 to Henry Stanley and Gertrude Amanda Chapman Tooley. She was the youngest of 13 children.

She moved from Iowa to Redmesa, Colorado in February 1926. She attended school in Redmesa and Marvel, Colorado until her senior year, then moved to Farmington, New Mexico.

On January 4, 1940, she married Aften LeRoy “Lee” Cheney in the Mesa Arizona Temple. They raised three children, Terence “Terry”, Linda, and Trent.

Virginia was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions in the different organizations of the church and was a visiting teacher for many years. Virginia and Lee served together on a mission in Kansas and Oklahoma. She and Lee worked at the Ogden LDS Temple Visitors Center for two years from 1987 to 1989, and met people from many different countries as well as from most of the states.

She worked as a postmaster in Redmesa, Colorado, then Hill Air Force Base and U.S. Forest Service in Ogden and retiring after 23 years of government service.

Virginia loved playing softball, reading (she has a large library of books), making quilts for all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as well as her sisters and several nieces and nephews.

Virginia is survived by her three children, Terence “Terry” LeRoy (RaVae) Cheney of Harrisville; Linda Lee (Michael) Gillespie of Eden; and Trent Vernon (Pamela) Cheney of Syracuse; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, brother, Paul Young; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee; brothers and sisters, Mae Spink, Charlie Tooley, Roy Tooley, Stanley Tooley, Blanche Winters, Grace Smelcer, Fred Tooley, twins Virgil and Vernon Tooley, Lovel Tooley, Olive Lee, and Clarence Tooley.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Huntsville Stake Center, 6500 East, 1900 North, Eden. Friends may visit with family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment, Mountain View Cemetery, Eden.
