Our loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister and friend passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 26, 2015, surrounded by her loving husband, children and grandchildren.
Virginia was born December 28, 1931, in Stoner Creek CO to Jose Remigio Chavez and Maria de LaLuz Romero. Her family moved to Mancos, CO, where she met the only love of her life, David Nickerson, whom she wed on October 11, 1948. They raised three children together and were blessed with over 66 years of marriage.
She was a hard worker and worked for over 30 years in the private sector and civil service; retiring in 1995 from Hill Air Force Base as an ordinance mechanic.
She was an avid reader, Jazz fan, played golf, embroidered and scrap booked decades of photos of her and Dave’s families. She mostly loved spending time with her family and happily cooked for hundreds of dinners and reunions.
She looked forward to her vacations every year which included trips to visit family in Colorado, Washington, and many other places. Her favorite place to vacation was Lincoln, City, OR. Upon retiring, she and Dave went on a cross country road trip for several weeks with destinations of Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, the Carolinas, New York, Boston and Missouri.
Virginia is survived by her husband, Dave of Layton; her son, Rudy (Jeanette) Nickerson of Layton; her son Tim (Melinda) Nickerson of Layton; and her son-in-law, Michael Coles of Layton. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; Renee Yarman, Bryan Nickerson, Matt Yarman, Mandy Nickerson, Scott Yarman, Isabella Nickerson, David Nickerson, and Rachel Nickerson; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eleanor Redden and MaryLou Mortensen and two brothers, Benny Chavez and Robert Chavez.
She was preceded in death by her precious daughter Cynthia Coles, her parents, three sisters, Faye, Sally and Clara and one brother, Fred Chavez.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Right at Home of Ogden, for their in-home care and assistance, especially Antje and Pauline for their dedication and loving care of Virginia over the last several months.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road where friends may visit with the family Tuesday, May 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. prior to the service.
Interment, Lindquist’s Memorial Park at Layton.
