Virginia A. Sprankle
Virginia A. Sprankle, our beloved mother left this world for a better one at the age of 99, on November 3, 2017. Virginia was the third born child of Henry and Pearl Snodgrass in Winnsboro, Texas and although life’s twists and turns took her to both Pennsylvania and Utah she remained a proud Texan her whole life. She married Floyd H. Sprankle on March 18, 1944. They had a loving marriage which resulted in three children, Sylvia, Suzanne and David. She was a devoted Christian and was a member of the Clearfield Community Church, Clearfield, UT.
Next to her family, Mom’s greatest love was teaching school. She completed her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education at the University of Utah. She taught very successfully, in many venues, which ranged from small communities such as Warriors Mark, PA to the rough inter-city schools of Harrisburg, PA but spent a large part of her career working in the Davis School District. She loved all of her students and made it a point to really get to know them. She had a special talent for recognizing when a student had a special need whether it was academic or emotional in nature. She taught many grades but especially loved teaching first grade where she felt that she could have the most impact on a student’s life. Many years after retirement while in public places she would be frequently approached by former students who recognized her and they would express their love and gratitude for her influence on their life.
She belonged to many clubs and organizations related to education, church, and community. Some of them to make note of include Delta Kappa Gamma Society, The National Educators Association, Utah Educators Association, Woman’s Society at Layton Community Church, and The Cultural Arts Club of Layton.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Doris Butler, Precia Harris, Merle Mehaffey, Jessie Ruth Davis, her brother Weldon Snodgrass and husband Floyd Sprankle. She is survived by her brother Blanton Snodgrass and wife Margaret, her three children Sylvia (Robert) Reber, Suzanne (Dorsey) Wilson, and David (Janette) Sprankle, her six grandchildren and their spouses, and her eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by Sarah Voigt, a close friend, who she considered family.
