Volmer L. Miller

Volmer L. Miller OGDEN - Volmer Larsen Miller, 87, quietly rejoined his beloved Naydene, on Thursday, June 25, 2009. Volmer was born in Logan, Utah on February 1, 1922, to Otto and Attella Miller, the oldest of eleven children. During his childhood and school years he lived in and near Weston, Idaho where he graduated from Weston High in 1940. Later that year, Volmer joined the Civilian Conversation Corps in Bosie, Idaho and served with them fighting forest fires and building access roads and trails. In the summer of 1942, he joined and served 3 years in the Army Air Corps during which he traveled extensively and flew 33 combat missions throughout the European theatre of operations. Honorably discharged after the war ended, he was called to serve in the LDS Central States Mission from January 1946 to January 1948. Upon returning to Ogden, Utah he met the love of his life, Naydene Sant who he would be sealed to for time and all eternity in the Logan Temple on July 1, 1948. After their marriage, Volmer and Naydene briefly lived in Ogden before moving to Logan while Volmer attended Utah State Agricultural College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. In 1954 the couple moved back to the Ogden valley where Volmer worked in a number of jobs before starting his 25 year civil service career at Hill Air Force Base. A faithful servant of the Lord, Volmer held many positions including ward clerk, home teacher, priesthood and Sunday School teacher in the LDS wards where he lived. Volmer loved the outdoors and spent many summer vacations camping and traveling around the states. A proud veteran, Volmer was active in the 390th Bomber Group Memorial Association and attended a number of reunions with that organization until health problems intervened. Volmer enjoyed gardening and proudly shared the fruits of his labor with neighbors and friends. An aspiring author, Volmer was published a number of times in the Dodge City Globe during his mission, penned a novel, and in later years assisted family members in assembling and writing their personal histories. Volmer was a dedicated father to his two children Vodean Miller and Katrina Haberman, and welcomed their spouses Lou Ann and Eric with open arms. His eyes always glimmered with playful joy whenever his six grandchildren would visit and he cheerfully welcomed his first great grandchild into the family in December 2007. Despite a tremendous battle with cancer and Alzheimer’s, Volmer was always known for a good story and a quick quip about his health and the number of trips he’d made around the sun, or how his “get and go [had] got up and went”. Special thanks to the Mount Ogden Nursing and Rehab center staff and to Pinnacle Hospice for their excellent and compassionate care, and especially to Karl for being there when we needed him. He is survived by his children, grandchildren Marissa, Breanna, and Makenna Haberman, Valon Miller, Nelanna Miller Fruik (Allen), and Landen Miller (Alicia) and great granddaughter Avery Miller. He is also survived by five brothers, Steven (Dorthy), Rollo (Delores), Don (Margariet), Lynn (Viola), Elias (Joyce), sister Naomi Eilers, brother-in-law Gene, and sister-in-law Phyllis. Volmer was preceded in death by his parents Otto and Attella Miller, his brothers Ariel and Waldo, sisters Naiada and Peggy, and sister-in-law Irene. A celebration of his life will be held Wednesday July 1, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. Friends may call at the mortuary on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Interment, Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd. Send condolences to the family at: www.lindquistmortuary.com
